ARLINGTON, Texas -- When I arrived in Denver in 2007 after the Rockies had lost the first two games of the World Series in Fenway Park, I found a team that seemed like it was spent. That Colorado team, remember, had gone 21-1 coming into that series but had nine days off and never regained its momentum. The Rockies lost both games at home and the series was quickly over. I don't get that sense here. The Rangers were resolute about returning home to do some damage against the Giants when we spoke to them here this afternoon. A few comments:
DENVER - A slowdown in the economy could cost the state nearly $700 million over the next five years and force cutbacks in next year's budget. The Legislature's financial analysts told lawmakers Thursday that between now and 2012 state revenues will be $693.8 million less than expected. They attributed the decline to a decrease in state income tax revenue caused by the recent downturn.
CAP-HAITIEN, Haiti -- Frightened police barricaded themselves inside their station Wednesday and said they could not repel a threatened rebel attack on Haiti's second-largest city, the last major government bastion in the north. Officers in other towns deserted their posts with no guerrillas in sight. Even as police made clear they were too scared to patrol the streets of Cap-Haitien, militant defenders of President Jean- Bertrand Aristide vowed to take a stand against the two-week-old rebellion, which has killed some 60 people and has attracted leaders with murderous backgrounds.
Madison -- Capitol Democrats, you just got what you wished for. Are you still sure it's what you want? For at least two years, you'll have to run state government -- and it's in a deep financial hole.

Salsa Latina is a hole-in-the-wall Colorado-style Mexican joint that is like another hole-in-the-wall Colorado-style Mexican joint, El Taco Rey, in almost every mystifying, maddening, wonderful way. For as long as I can remember, Latina's owner Danny Aguilar was the man behind the counter at El Taco Rey, doling out jokes and Styrofoam boxes of green chili pork-avocado burritos.
How infinitely more intriguing your cover photo would have been had the pro-peace Rae Vogeler been holding the American flag and the "pro-victory" Robert Thelen III been holding a sign equivalent to Rae's ("Support Our Troops. Keep Sending Them"). What a frustrating disappointment to yet again see the perpetuation that the notions of pro-war equal patriotism and the notions of pro-peace equal anti-establishment/anti-American ("True Believers," 12/16/05). Sounds like Robert Thelen's got a nice political career in front of him. He has no real intellectual backing for his ideas and believes in shouting down all forms of opposition and dropping labels like "radical," "liberal" and "anti-troop" as evidence of why his opponents are wrong. Robert Thelen III shouldn't wait for a cushy assignmen...
... at Robert Thelen's pinched, angry-looking face should be enough to alert anyone that he is a rabi... be in face paint, crouching in a muddy hole, sipping an iced strawberry crème frappucino whil...
Once again, Miamisburg's boys golf team battled itself to earn a place in the district tournament. Last year, Viking teammates Adam and Eric Thompson tied for the final individual qualifying spot with a pair of 84s. The brothers had to face each other in a playoff with Adam, a senior at the time, advancing with a birdie on the first hole.
COLUMBUS --Ohio's next governor -- whether it's a re-elected Ted Strickland or a new-to-the-office John Kasich -- and lawmakers will face a multi-billion-dollar hole in the next biennial budget. Depending on whose numbers you use, the amount of one-time monies in the state's current two-year spending plan equals roughly $8 billion.
FORT WORTH, Texas -- David Toms made a big comeback at Colonial, winning on the PGA Tour for the first time since 2006 with a closing 3-under-par 67 on Sunday to win by one stroke over Charlie Wi. A day after blowing a seven-stroke advantage to go into the final round trailing Wi by one, Toms made an eagle with a wedge shot from 83 yards at par-5 11th hole. He threw both arms up in the air and a smile took over his face.
