[Daniel H. Pink]'s got credentials, though not in the field of education. In the 1990s, he was an aide to then-U.S. Labor secretary Robert Reich and worked as chief speechwriter for then-Vice President Al Gore. Ironically, he's a self-described "extreme left-brain thinker" who confesses to "an unnatural love affair" with numbers, charts and graphs. Pink's career has been about analyzing systems and how they operate. And, lest he be criticized for seeing public education strictly through the eyes of an economist, he readily acknowledges that its mission is not just "to deliver employees to employers," but to help children grow up to become full-fledged participants in civic society.
In many respects. Pink's ideas aren't new - to Vermont's educators or to the business community. For years...

When I was in my early 20s, I had a German shepherd named Jade. Gorgeous dog. Heart of gold. Brain of mush. Perhaps the only truly simple German shepherd that ever lived, but I loved her desperately. She and I had the kind of connection that - even for an extreme dog lover like me, capable of growing roots to a dog in 6.2 seconds - doesn't come along every day.
When she was only about 3 years old, I found a spot on the bend of Jade's left hind leg, an open sore that wouldn't heal, no matter what I put on it. It was ugly and growing rapidly, and when I took her to the vet, it was already the size of a quarter.

Last week, at the very end of my column, I hinted that I would rather steal material from the Internet and pass it off as my own than write about Paris Hilton. Unhappily, I ran out of space before I could say everything I had to say on the subject - the subject being the lengths to which I would go to avoid writing about Paris Hilton. Please bear with me as I continue with that line of thought, dear readers. I feel that if I don't get said everything that is in my heart to say (relating to how intensely I feel about not writing about Paris Hilton), my brain sack might rupture or something. So even if not reading about Paris Hilton may be of little importance to you, surely you can understand how not writing about Paris Hilton is a matter of great urgency to me.

[...] many critics read the characterization of the city as a reflection of the period's economic history: the increasing globalization of the national economy with respect to the Pacific Rim, especially LA, and the widespread "Yellow Peril" fear of a Japanese corporate invasion.
