Barack Obama's press secretary, Robert Gibbs, criticized the party liberals who have likened the president to George W. Bush, calling them "professional left" and said, "They will be satisfied when we have Canadian health care and we've eliminated the Pentagon.
Then he apologized. He shouldn't have.

One of the snowiest Januaries on record. Repeated flooding and record cresting along the Passaic, Ramapo and Pompton rivers. The second-hottest month on record -- followed by the wettest month. A snowstorm in October. Thunder and lightning on Dec. 21.
Extreme weather? New Jersey had it all in 2011.

BLOOMINGTON - Brian Cremer heard the news Friday night after settling into his seat at U.S. Cellular Coliseum with his wife and three young children.
The scheduled exhibition game between the Bloomington Extreme and the Rock River Raptors was canceled after the Rockford-based team had transportation problems that prevented it from traveling to the Twin Cities.

Hillary Clinton has shed the most famous tears since Alexander the Great wept that there were no more worlds to conquer. Observers have since noted that she was exhausted; that she was down in the polls; that she might have been on the prowl for an opportunity to soften her image; and/or that she might have been revealing a bit of her true self. I'm less interested in whether the tears were genuine (actually there was no visible moisture, just a catch in the voice that is easier to fake) than in the proximate cause of that tender moment.
Sen. Clinton said, "I have so many opportunities from this country. I just don't want to see us fall backwards.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 18 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Republican National Committee unveils a new Web site feature on http://www.gop.com/ DemocratsonAlito/ designed for visitors to track Democrat Senators' position on Judge Samuel Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court.
Following last week's hearings in the Senate Judiciary Committee where Ted Kennedy, Chuck Schumer and the far-left viciously attacked the highly qualified Judge Alito, the RNC asks "Where Will Democrats Stand On Alito?" The new Web feature enables visitors to click on a state to find out whether the Democrat Senator stands with Judge Samuel Alito, or with Ted Kennedy, Chuck Schumer, and Howard Dean. The Web site will also highlight Judge Alito's broad level of support throughout the country.

The crisis is compounded by extreme weather due to climate change, including drought such as in Australia, one of [the] world's leading agricultural producers where wheat and rice crops have been devastated, and increasingly violent storms such as those that have wreaked havoc in Central America and parts of Asia and other regions in recent years.
The worst effect of current policies has been the neglect and undermining of domestic agriculture in developing countries. The change in emphasis in recent decades from domestic production to importing basic grains and processed foods heavily subsidised by governments in the developed world has been driving small farmers out of business practically everywhere.
At the international level there should be a reorientation and strengthening of p...

To the Editor:
I've been very disgusted with the moronic shambles, violence, and disrespectful displays of the recent protests in New York City, D.C., and others. They seem to be focused primarily on financial institutions, although it is not clear who or what they represent. They seem to be protesting anything and everything! These people are organized riff-raff mobs acting like Stalinist/Marxists. They have obviously been organized by extreme left-wing liberals who, with the help of a biased media, are trying to direct similarity to tea party protests. Good luck. here is no similarity at all.

Klein is the pastor emeritus at Second Presbyterian Church in Roanoke.
People of good will are grieved by the tragedy that unfolded in Tucson, Ariz., on Jan. 8. Unfortunately, it has sparked much too much rhetoric from both the extreme left and the radical right, blaming each other's vitriolic language for the shooter's violence.

The former governor of Utah entered the Republican presidential primary at the extreme left of the current crop. For citizens interested in Jon Huntsman as potential chief executive, the moment of observation might be short.
In his opening remarks, Huntsman uttered this radical comment: "We will conduct this campaign on the high road. I respect the president of the United States. He and I have a difference of opinion on how to help a country we both love. But the question each of us wants the voters to answer is who will be the better president, not who's the better American.
