MANILA, Philippines - A Qantas jumbo jet carrying 345 passengers made an emergency landing today with a gaping hole in its fuselage after a mysterious "explosive decompression," officials said.
There were no injuries, but some passengers vomited after disembarking the Boeing 747-400, said Octavio Lina, Manila International Airport Authority deputy manager for operations.

Boeing didn't retain manufacturing records that may have allowed investigators to determine why the fuselage on an American Airlines 757-200 jetliner tore in flight last year, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.
That lack of records has also hampered the safety board's efforts to pinpoint the cause of a larger tear that forced the crew of a Southwest Airlines 737-300 to make an emergency landing April 1, according to two government officials familiar with the investigation. They asked not to be identified as the probe is ongoing.

MANILA, Philippines -- The 346 passengers were cruising at 29,000 feet Friday when an explosive bang shook the Qantas jumbo jet. The plane descended rapidly. Oxygen masks dropped from the ceiling as debris flew through the cabin from a hole that had suddenly appeared in the floor.
It wasn't until they were safely on the ground after an emergency landing that they realized how lucky they had been: A hole the size of a small car had been ripped into the Boeing 747-400's metal skin and penetrated the fuselage.

I HAVE TRAVELED more than 5 million miles by air - far enough to get to the moon and back 10 times - but I still get a sense of amazement when I'm in a fully laden 747 and we lift off. A million pounds of metal traveling at more than 200 mph, countering the force of gravity. It's a minor miracle.
