EPA Region 10 today issues a final action for six effluent limits for produced water under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) General Permit for Oil and Gas Exploration, Development and Production Facilities in State and Federal Waters in Cook Inlet, Permit No. AKG-31-5000 (Permit). The effluent limits subject to the final action are: mercury, copper, total aromatic hydrocarbons (TAH), total aqueous hydrocarbons (TAqH), silver, and whole effluent toxicity (WET), pursuant to the provisions of the Clean Water Act (CWA or ``the Act''), 33 U.S.C. 1251. Consol Energy Inc., expecting that coal and natural gas will continue supplying U.S. energy needs for years, shored up its operations with the $3.5 billion purchase of Dominion Resources Inc.'s Appalachian Basin natural gas exploration-production business.
The primary resource Consol acquires in the deal announced Monday is more than 491,000 acres in Pennsylvania and West Virginia that are part of the natural gas-rich Marcellus Shale formation. The transaction includes nearly 1.5 million acres, with more than 9,000 producing wells.

Plains Exploration & Production Co has agreed to purchase Pogo Producing Co for about $3.46 billion in cash and stock. Pogo Producing is an oil and natural gas exploration and production company operating in the US and Canada. Plains Exploration & Production Co explores on- and offshore areas for oil and natural gas. The combined company will have a total estimated reserve potential, including possible and probable reserves, of 1.4 billion barrels of oil equivalent. The addition of Pogo's assets will also position Plains to create a master limited partnership.
