The purpose of this study is to discover if occupational preferences have any bearing on whether, or not, individuals decide to pursue entrepreneurial careers. Specifically, this paper seeks to determine if cognitive occupational expectancies (concerning perceived intrinsic and extrinsic occupational rewards) significantly influence plans to undertake entrepreneurship as a primary vocation. Past theory has determined relevant entrepreneurial rewards to be the intrinsic reward of independence, the intrinsic reward of a satisfying way of life, and the extrinsic reward of profit. Preference for each of these rewards is examined by utilizing the Valence Model of the Expectancy Theory. Findings indicate that individuals who perceive entrepreneurship as advantageous based on their attraction ...

Based on surveys of members of the National Association of Forensic Economics (NAFE), the predominant method for calculating worklife expectancy involves the use of Markov process statistical worklife expectancy tables, with the LPE method as a distant second, use of a fixed retirement date as a close third, and with median or mean years to final labor force separation a distant fourth. However, no paper has specifically addressed the reasons why the majority of forensic economists (or at least a majority of those completing NAFE surveys) apparently feel that statistical worklife tables compiled by standard Markov process models are superior to calculations based on the LPE version of Markov process models. A statement arguing that the LPE method is superior to standard statistical work...

Dr. Delgado: New Federal Data Demonstrate Positive Impact on Health of Culture, Family, and Community
WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- "A 'minority model' of health should be discarded. Today's life expectancy data show that understanding the unique Hispanic health profile holds the promise of lessons that can applied for good health for all communities," said Dr. Delgado, President and CEO of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health and author of The Latina Guide to Health (Newmarket Press, 2010).

The Board of Trustees of the Federal Old-Age and Survivors Insurance and Disability Insurance (OASDI) Trust Funds reports on the current and projected future financial status of the trust funds annually. The Trustees project trust fund finances 75 years into the future. Mortality is one key demographic assumption that feeds into these long-range projections. This article reviews a range of predictions about long-term mortality improvement and assesses where the Trustees' 75-year mortality projection falls within this range. In general, the predictions of future mortality declines in the 2004 Social Security Trustees Report tend to be in the mainstream of professional actuarial and international official government opinion and to be lower than the majority of the small group of demograph...

This research investigates four alternative models for computing the present value of future medical care and illustrates the valuation differences among the alternatives. The four models are the life expectancy model, the expected med cost model, the expected present value model, and the no tax expected med cost model. Models 1 through 3 integrate tax liability on the basis of an allocated award. Valuation comparisons among the models are presented for variations across the most critical valuation parameters including, age, base level of medical care, and real future medical care growth rates. Results show only modest differences, less than 2.0%, across the first three models when the med cost growth rate approaches the before tax interest rate for all age and base level med care compa...

The current research extends propositions from uses and gratifications, the technology acceptance model, and the expectancy-value perspective and attempts to explain audience connections to the 360° or multimodal content provider (news organization). The findings suggest a strong connection between surveillance gratifications and ritualistic media use on attitudes or perceptual orientations toward the news organization; this in turn mediates and best predicts satisfaction with the 360° news experience. The overall findings also suggest a branding effect or an extension of the audience's television news perceptions to the multimodal content provided by the news organization.

This study examines the determinants of health status (as measured by life expectancy at birth) in SSA based on the Grossman (1972) theoretical model which considers the economic (the ratio of health expenditure to GDP and the per capita food availability index), social (the illiteracy rate and alcohol consumption), and environmental factors (urbanization rate and carbon dioxide emission per capita index). The coefficients of the health status function are estimated by one-way and two-way panel data analyses. The two-way random-effect model results suggest that a decrease in illiteracy rate and an increase in the food availability index are well positively associated with improvements in life expectancy at birth. Overall results also suggest that a health policy that may focus on the pr...
