Chronic ill-health and the prospect of premature mortality haunt billions of people around the developing world. While working towards global health and stability, few goals can be more worthy than that of lifting these burdens. But the question remains as to whether investment in health care should be justified solely on humanitarian grounds or whether a valid economic argument can be made -- that is, whether there can be a quantifiable return on health care investment. The author's paper is the second paper published in the last two years that challenges the conventional wisdom that improvement in a country's health care results in meaningful improvements in its GDP. The study was divided into two main areas: first, the study of the impact on GDP of an increase in life expectancy, and...

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is proposing to amend the Agency's regulations to allow the manufacturer of a cigarette or smokeless tobacco product with a trade or brand name that is also the trade or brand name of a nontobacco product to continue to use the name if the tobacco product was sold in the United States on or before June 22, 2009. FDA further proposes to amend the Agency's regulations to ensure that a manufacturer of a cigarette or smokeless tobacco product may continue to use its trade or brand name even if that name is subsequently registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) or subsequently used for a nontobacco product.

We investigate the effects of monetary incentives on accounting student motivation. Using a within-persons decision modeling approach and Russian accounting student participants to investigate potential motivators, we find students with monetary incentives p laced significantly less emphasis on their overall grade-point average and significantly more emphasis on esteem in the eyes of classmates. Our results suggest monetary incentives do not undermine personal satisfaction, an intrinsic motivator. Finally, in the context of improving course performance, we find students with monetary incentives tend to value the attractiveness of academic success over the expectancy of success in making their effort-level decisions, whereas students without monetary incentives tend to value the expectan...

One of the less recognized effects of longer life expectancy has been a significant shift in the main causes of death.
In 1900, when life expectancy was only about 50 years, the four most prevalent causes of death were all acute illnesses. We have relatively little control over acute illnesses and the outcome of the illness is generally resolved relatively quickly.

The paper attempts to examine the socio-economic determinants of life expectancy for 91 developing countries using multiple regression and probit frameworks. Disaggregated probit regression has been applied for three groups of countries with low, medium and high life expectancy. Most of explanatory variables turned out to be statistically insignificant, which imply that relevant socio-economic factors like per capita income, education, health expenditure, access to safe water, and urbanization cannot always be considered to be influential in determining life expectancy in developing countries. Based on the analyses it has been suggested that the countries should formulate and implement appropriate social sector policies and programs to increase physicians' availability, and reduce adult...

MIAMI - Thirty years after America started battling HIV/AIDS, deaths linked to the virus have plummeted. New HIV cases are down by three-quarters. Life expectancy has more than tripled. Many HIV- positive people lead active lives, often on a single pill a day.
But there's a darker side: More than 1.2 million Americans still are living with HIV/AIDS, and 40,000 new infections and 16,000 deaths are expected this year. Drugs to combat the virus can cost $20,000 or more a year per patient. Side effects can include liver damage and hallucinations, and life expectancies are seven years shorter than for average Americans.

The purpose of this study is to discover if occupational preferences have any bearing on whether, or not, individuals decide to pursue entrepreneurial careers. Specifically, this paper seeks to determine if cognitive occupational expectancies (concerning perceived intrinsic and extrinsic occupational rewards) significantly influence plans to undertake entrepreneurship as a primary vocation. Past theory has determined relevant entrepreneurial rewards to be the intrinsic reward of independence, the intrinsic reward of a satisfying way of life, and the extrinsic reward of profit. Preference for each of these rewards is examined by utilizing the Valence Model of the Expectancy Theory. Findings indicate that individuals who perceive entrepreneurship as advantageous based on their attraction ...
