The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line," W.E.B. Du Bois wrote in 1903 - and I will not quibble. But the problem of the 21st century is the problem of culture, not just the infamous "culture of poverty" but what I would call the culture of smugness. The emblem of this culture is the term "American exceptionalism." It has been adopted by the right to mean America, alone among the nations, is beloved of God. Maybe so, but some days it's hard to tell.
The term "American exceptionalism" has been invoked by Mitt Romney, Mike Pence, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, Mike Huckabee and, of course, Sarah Palin. I would throw in Michele Bachmann, since if she has not said it yet, she soon will because she says almost anything. She is no exception to the cult of American...

A new phrase has entered the political arena -- "American exceptionalism.
It suggests that America, as a society, is different. Reminding us that America has come from a set of backwoods colonies to superpower status while other nations have declined. Some candidates for President have made the idea of American exceptionalism the centerpiece of their campaigns.

In his new book "Israeli Exceptionalism: The Destabilizing Logic of Zionism," M. Shahid Alam successfully argues that the moral force behind the Zionist movement is a sense of Jewish, and consequently Israeli, exceptionalism. This claim of exceptionalism underpins what he calls the "destabilizing logic of Zionism." According to Alam, Zionism "could advance only by creating and promoting conflicts between the West and the Islamicate" (p. 3). He defines the "Islamicate" as consisting of the broader Muslim world, with the Middle East at its heart.
In the second segment of the book, Alam examines the history of the region, reviewing the violent history of the early Zionist colonists and describing it as a core, rather than incidental, program of Zionism. Violent, racist attitudes towards th...

AROUND the world, people tend to think of their own country as best. Politicians often win popular support by pandering to this "we're number one" feeling. In Ancient Greece, Pericles roused Athenians by lauding the innate superiority of Athenians.
Now, "American exceptionalism" has become a focus in the Republican campaign for president. Some GOP candidates question President Obama's patriotism by saying Obama doesn't think America is better than other countries.

In the 1850s, on the steps of the Waco courthouse, Wallace Jefferson's great-great-great-grandfather was sold. Today, Jefferson is chief justice of Texas' Supreme Court. The governor who nominated him also nominated the state's first Latina justice. Rick Perry, 61, the longest-serving governor in Texas history and, in his 11th year, currently the nation's senior governor, says these nominations are two of his proudest accomplishments.
French cuffs and cowboy boots are, like sauerkraut ice cream, an eclectic combination, but Perry, who wears both, is a potentially potent candidate for the Republican presidential nomination because his political creed is uneclectic, matching that of the Republican nominating electorate. He was a "10th Amendment conservative" ("The powers not de...
