Columbia business leaders and University of Missouri researchers are working to put the city at the forefront of economic development in space by attempting to attract a NASA national laboratory to town.
If Columbia is chosen to receive the $15 million-per-year grant being made available through NASA to establish a new national laboratory, it would be a research facility with a "venture capitalist" bent, said Rob Duncan, MU vice chancellor for research and an ex-officio board member of Regional Economic Development Inc.

Early Friday morning, after several hours behind closed doors, the Board of Education settled the school-readiness scandal, with agreements requiring three families to repay the district a total of $27,000 and essentially stripping Catherine Biagetti of her title as the federally financed program's director. But with the state Department of Education breathing down the school district's neck to cough up restitution by next week, the school board said it plans to cut the check using the district's money.

Gaming needs more daylight, not less," says Pennsylvania Treasurer Rob McCord. He's right -- and admirably going beyond mere talk by taking action to ensure greater transparency regarding casinos for taxpayers.
Mr. McCord has filed a lawsuit asking Commonwealth Court to affirm his right to attend all meetings of the state Gaming Control Board.
