Writer isn't open to science of evolution In his commentary, "Cartoonist errs in mocking God and creation" (Aug. 10), Ronald Bessette asks: "Where is the massive amount of evidence [for evolution]?" Of course the massive amount of evidence is in the vast scientific literature that not only proves that humans and other animals evolved from simpler forms of life, but also that the Earth is about 4.5 billion (not a few thousand) years old.
Jonathan Wells' Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design (Regnery) is surely the best book ever written on the problems of Darwin's theory of evolution. Since there is no evidence for species changes between the simplest forms of unicellular life, it is not surprising that there is no evidence for evolution ... throughout the whole array of higher multi-cellular organisms.
Just re-released in paperback is Richard Dawkins' latest book, "The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution." As expected from one of the world's leading science writers, educators and popular defenders of neo-Darwinian evolution, the book is a lucid, well-argued case for the existence of a grand evolutionary past for all matter, especially the living kind. Not only an engaging read, the book is beautifully supplemented from its vibrant cover to its spectacular color inserts. From the onset, Mr. Dawkins points out the disheartening condition that so many people are confused by what the modern theory of evolution entails. Many will argue, for instance, that "evolution is just a theory," without realizing that as a scientific term, "theory" means in essence a "verified hypothes...
The discovery of a ground sloth skull west of Beaumont has stoked the debate between evolutionists and creationists over man's origins and the age of the earth. Some scientists say the fossil dates back 1.8 million years. It's one more grain of sand on the beach of evidence for evolution," said Jim Blauth, a biology professor at the University of Redlands.
I believe in de-evolution. I see evidence for it every day in my mirror: creeping pounds with a will to survive, water retention issues, a random whisker that appears on my chin. I believe I'm devolving into a barrel cactus. Men devolve too. A friend, who is losing his hair, vision and muscle-tone, thinks he's turning into a sea sponge. He knows his fittest days are behind him.
Well, it's not that we don't believe in global warming," he explained. "It's that, well, environmental issues have to compete with sports, computer games and a bunch of other activities. And we hear a lot of opinions, whether climate change is natural or manmade. And it's not like there's any agreement on what to do about it Who wants to go around thinking about the end of the world? Guess what? For those who see their mission in life as protecting children from R-rated content in TV and films, kids' fears about climate change are just more proof that environmentalists are up to no good Republican blogger Philip Brennan blames Leonardo DiCaprio for scaring children, because the actor has called for more green outreach to youth. Brennan cites a "shocking" incident in which "brainwashed...

Prothero presents the fossil evidence for the evolution of primitive fish from animals related to the echinoderms (starfish, sea urchins, sand dollars, etc.), though means of an important evolutionary mechanism called neoteny (the persistence of juvenal traits into adulthood). Prothero opens the final chapter, Chapter 16, titled "Why Does It Matter?," with a quote from Judge John Jones from his verdict in the most recent creationist court debacle, Kitzmiller et al. v. Dover Area School District: "It is ironic that several of these individuals, who so staunchly and proudly touted their religious convictions in public, would time and again lic to cover their tracks and disguise the real purpose behind the ID Policy.
It is time for those of us who are trained in science and who are legally and morally responsible for evaluating broad spectrums of scientific facts every day to speak out against the biased, evolution-favoring articles that appear in the lay press. I refer to an unfortunate and misleading article, which appeared in the November issue of the National Geographic magazine titled "Was Darwin Wrong? No, the Evidence for Evolution is Overwhelming."The article was written by David Quammen, an excellent writer, but without formal training in science. His academic training at Yale and Oxford was in literature. His graduate work was on William Faulkner. And his answer to his rhetorical question was incorrect.
Editor, the Tribune: The April 2 letters were a new level in strangeness and inaccuracy. The Darwin fish is marketed with emblems ridiculing Christian faith - tactics rarely used by those ignorant, bigoted Christians. Hey! My fish is missing!" became, "Those thieving, cowardly, fascist Christians!" Not unlike the chain of evidence for evolution.
