Spirit Airlines Inc. is nearly doubling the fee it charges to book domestic tickets online. The Miramar, Fla.-based company increased its "passenger usage fee" from $8.99 each way to $16.99 last week, according to spokeswoman Misty Pinson. The international fee fell $2 each way to $16.99. Spirit aims to charge its passengers low base fares but then adds a bevy of fees for everything from placing a carry-on bag in the overhead bin to having a glass of water onboard. In January it plans to start charging $5 for each boarding pass a ticket agent prints. The passenger usage fee is charged to anyone buying tickets online, which are the bulk of Spirit's sales. Anybody who treks to the airport to buy a ticket can avoid the fee. Apple has turned on its iTunes Match service - although it's two w...

Editors note: St. Albans native and WVU alumnus Ken Crockett headed West Virginias office in Nagoya, Japan, from 1996 to 2007. He now works for an oil and gas supply company in Tokyo. When Ken Crockett felt his downtown Tokyo office building shake at 2:30 p.m. on March 11 he didnt think much of it. The building had been rocked by a quake just two days before. Following protocol, Crockett moved from his desk to a doorway. You get a feeling in your gut it is kind of like a sixth sense, Crockett said Thursday in a telephone interview from Tokyo. Ten seconds in, we knew this was really different. After about 15 seconds it started to really shake and we realized it was time to get out of the building. Crockett works in an eight-story office building. Were on the second floor, he said. Were ...
It is time to set the record straight. Small-business employers and their employees face a looming crisis come Jan. 1. That is when hefty tax increases will take effect if Congress does not act to reinstate the 2001 and 2003 tax rates. Worse, there is a misperception among policymakers and the general public that increases to the top-tier rates will only be a tax on the rich. Our company, Power Curbers Inc., is a manufacturer that makes and sells concrete paving equipment. We were founded in 1953 and are still a family-owned company that grosses more than $20 million per year and employs more than 130 workers at our facilities in Salisbury, N.C., and Cedar Falls, Iowa. Like many other manufacturers, we have struggled through this crippling recession by making difficult pay, time and exp...
They share the same problem. Their properties border a proposed injection well that could pump hundreds of thousands of gallons a day of oilfield waste into the ground. This waste, known in the industry as "production water," is mostly oily saltwater used in drilling. But it also contains substances such as waste crude, sludge from storage pits and tank bottoms, used glycol, amine, and hydrogen sulfide scrubber liquid, to name only a few. There are at least 26 acknowledged chemicals in the waste, including such known carcinogens as benzene and one category unhelpfully listed as "other." It's not the kind of stuff [Cecile Carson] wants in the drinking water she brings up from her well. Yet the Railroad Commission doesn't classify oil and gas waste as hazardous. That means the commission,...
