The competition among midsize sedans - the best-selling car class in the U.S. - is so fierce it brings to mind someone throwing hunks of chop meat into shark-infested waters. The biggest, baddest shark at the moment is Hyundai's 2011 Sonata, which has soared to No. 6 in overall U.S. automotive sales and is No. 3 among midsize sedans. Other sharks battling for their share of chum include the current sales leader, Toyota's Camry, along with standouts such as the Chevy Malibu, Ford Fusion, Mazda 6, Nissan Altima and even Subaru's redesigned Legacy sedan.

Dear Tom and Ray: Everyone knows it is illegal to change an odometer reading, and I wouldn't do it even if I knew how. My 1999 Chevy Malibu has an electronic display. I am curious as to why the odometer data is not lost when the car battery is removed. On the electronic clocks I have, if the power is disconnected, you have to reset the clock when power is restored. An "expert" told me there is a small battery backup in the circuit. But what if the car were put in storage for months and this battery eventually failed? Thanks.
