We were at a similar kind of national intensity and discussion eight years ago when the Hawaii case came forward. Gay people have been seeking the right to marry since the dawn of the gay rights movement, ever since [the] Stonewall [protest against police raids], in 1969. But in those years the country wasn't really ready for this discussion and the courts rubber-stamped the exclusion [of gays from marriage]. What changed last year was Canada began to allow gay couples to marry and Massachusetts followed. It's no longer hypothetical, it's a reality, and actually a pretty reassuring reality. Our opponents don't want us to see that the sky doesn't fall. They're losing the discussion when they see that real families are helped and no one is hurt. It's a nonsensical argument, which is why t...
NEW YORK - Many obstacles still lie ahead for supporters of same- sex marriage, and eventually they will need Congress or the Supreme Court to embrace their goal. For the moment, though, they are jubilantly channeling the lyrics of "New York, New York. Now that we've made it here, we'll make it everywhere," said prominent activist Evan Wolfson, who took up the cause of marriage equality as a law student three decades ago.

NEW YORK, Feb. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today the Obama Administration called for heightened scrutiny in the federal lawsuits challenging the so-called "Defense of Marriage Act" and called on the Department of Justice not to defend the discriminatory law. Below is a statement from Evan Wolfson, President and Founder of Freedom to Marry, the campaign to win marriage nationwide: Freedom to Marry applauds the President and the Attorney General for acknowledging that sexual orientation discrimination has no place in American life and must be presumed unconstitutional, recognizing that discriminatory laws like so-called DOMA must be looked at with skeptical eyes, not rubber stamped.
Evan Wolfson, head of the national Freedom to Marry group, said he was "very disappointed" to hear some of the justices suggest the only loss for gay couples was use of the word "marriage." That, he said, "really minimizes the harm that exclusion from marriage and the selective denial of fundamental rights inflicts on gay people.
It's called the 'certainty clause,'" said [Evan Wolfson], "because it establishes certainty that your federal protections and responsibilities will remain with you no matter where you travel" as a same-sex married couple. "The federal government will have a consistent approach. And it's not telling states what to do," says Wolfson.
[CORRECTION: Evan Wolfson's name was incorrect on one reference. Correction ran 2/27/2004.] The issue of same-sex marriage literally took center stage Tuesday, when a prominent advocate and outspoken opponent of gay unions squared off at the Fine Arts Center.
Religion, though, has a very different tradition among Latina/o communities from the role it has played among African Americans. Mainly, religion among Latinas/os has meant the Catholic church, and the church's position has been very clear on homosexuality: You're a sinner, you're going to die. Yet, there have been some openings for conversations about LGBT issues in faith communities. Often those who are ready to engage with us are Catholics from countries in which Liberation Theology played an important role. Because the Liberation Theology tradition was itself so anti-establishment, people are willing to accept the possibility of difference. Activists across the country have sought ways to address what Evan Wolfson calls the "moveable middle" - the sector of Americans that is neither...
