GETTING TO the "root" of image, power, self-esteem image, means delving deeply into black history, heritage, and our psyche. These issues are tackled and dissected in the documentary My Nappy Roots: A Journey Through Black Hair-itage. A 78-minute film that explores the social, psychological, and cultural issues that surround the sometimes touchy subject of black hair, was screened at Fort Lauderdale's Nova Southeastern University last month and has been doing the rounds in schools and libraries across the country.
Producer/Director Regina Kimbell, proudly wearing locks, opens pandora s box with My Nappy Roots, forcing viewers to question their own attitude to black hair. The film draws attention to the racism and the sometimes unquestioning acceptance European standard of beauty by many...

By virtue of the many life lessons passed down to him by his mother, Kanye [Donda West] communicated her real beauty in his songs. I'm sure Donda West was a very beautiful person already. But society had her thinking by an otherwise different standard, and she took an unnecessary risk. Maybe there's a lesson we can all learn in this great loss. To appreciate the beauty God gives us, and make society appreciate our beauty standards. There is a beauty in the fullness of breasts, hips and buttocks that come with age. There is a beauty in "love handles" (both male and female ones), and the "love guts" we acquire as we age gracefully. A winkle line and a sprinkle of gray is not the end of the world if one's world is not dictated by vanity. But even the vain need to find the beauty in themsel...

These are the questions posed by , a provocative documentary which suggests that African-American females are suffering from a form of self-image disorder. Produced and directed by Daphne Valerius, this provocative examination of a timely subject features sage contributions from such icons as actresses Regina King, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Juanita Jennings and Amelia Marshall, PBS news anchor Gwen Mil, Public Enemy's Chuck D, BET producer Darlise Blount, Essence Magazine fashion editor Pamela Edwards, historian Dr. Lez Edmond and cultural critic Michaela Angela Davis.
Ms. King bemoans that we have "a whole generation of lost women who don't that it's okay to be you." Meanwhile, Jada reflects upon having herself gone "through a period of shame." Fortunately, the partic...

Though I never met her, by most all accounts, Dr. Donda West was a beautiful woman with a beautiful spirit and a beautiful value system that produced the ultimate rags to riches story in her son, [Kanye]. Kanye West's music frequently intermixes his life's lessons that were often conflicts between what he wanted to be versus what his mother wanted him to be. And while the young West took a divergent path to success, overcoming what his mother knew were significant odds to succeed in the turbulent music game, the influence of his mother's insistence on education as a fallback option for Kanye was (is) ever-present in the rapper's consciousness.

Innovation strategy helps a company in three ways: exciting its customers, outperforming competitors, and building a new product portfolio. The literature describes many frameworks for innovation strategy but offers little detail about how to implement them. This paper identifies 12 ways of visualizing innovation strategies: platform offering, co-creation, cycle time reduction, brand value enhancement, technology leveraging, future-proofing, lean development, partnering, innovation mutation, creative destruction, market segmentation, and acquisition. These strategies allow 100 leading global companies to dominate their markets and outperform the competition through innovation.

Monique can host one million pageants to celebrate being "big and beautiful," and work to redefine the term "fat," making overweight people feel good about themselves, but at the end of the day, people are still dying unnecessarily. Redefining our feelings about being fat and/or being overweight won't stop that. An understanding of what is at stake may help.
For example, some Black people call a desire to be and/or to love "skinny" people (little body fat) a "European" standard, but that is an extreme reaction and it just isn't true. African people weren't traditionally overweight and unhealthy until we came to the New World, where we ate horribly and adopted unhealthy lifestyles (that's European).
We are producing new generations of overweight children while the nation is learning to "...
