The crisis of the euro, the common currency of 17 European Union members, continues unabated. Because of massive, sustained budget deficits by several eurozone countries, some could default on their sovereign debt obligations, or the euro itself might disintegrate, profoundly affecting the EU's political and economic future.
Very little media attention, however, is focused on a very different, but even more important, EU problem, namely its "democratic deficit." This large, growing gap between remote EU institutions in Brussels and citizens of its member states dramatically highlights the rising frustration and impotence felt by individual voters. To combat the euro crisis, EU elites are ignoring or overriding popular opposition to harsh austerity measures and imposing on fellow democra...

It is suggested that a multilateral tax treaty between the United States and the EU countries is the most comprehensive way to solve conflicts between EC law and current bilateral US-Member State tax treaties while preserving the tax sovereignty of the EU countries. A single multilateral treaty could replace more than 300 intraEU and US-EU Member State bilateral tax treaties. The United States and each of the EU Member States have greatly varying domestic tax systems and each country has different policy goals it would like to achieve through tax treaties. Gaining consensus among such a large group of countries would be difficult, particularly since the profile of the new Member States differs from that of the old Member States. The new Members are less developed, and their interests do...

Under the Maastricht Treaty of 1992, a single currency called the "euro" was adopted, and economic criteria for membership in the European Monetary Union were established. The objectives of the Maastricht Treaty were to eliminate the costs connected with several European currencies, increase both currency and international stability, and stimulate economic growth and employment with a more efficient single market and European integration. The individual Member States and the European Union as a whole would benefit with free circulation of goods, services, people, and capital among the Member States ("What is," n.d., p. 2-3). On January 1, 1999, eleven of the fifteen existing European Union (EU) Member States joined the EMU: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Lux...

Between Aug 22 and 28, a European Delegation of former ministers from The Netherlands, Ireland, and Germany and a high-ranking former ambassador from France paid a fact-finding visit to Israel and Palestine. The visit took place shortly after Israel's disengagement from the Gaza Strip. The Delegation embarked on its trip at this crucial moment in time to witness and assess at first-hand those facts that (continue to) threaten the prospects for a just peace and that are not being decisively addressed by the international community. Details of the facts as observed by the Delegation are presented.

The E.U. has been at the forefront of global data privacy since 1995. The EU Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC (the Directive) and national legislation implemented in E.U. Member States, like the UK Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA), provide broad definitions of "Personal Data" and who is deemed to be a "Data Controller," ensuring that virtually all background due diligence companies and their clients, such as banks, pension funds, hedge funds and consultants, are caught in the net of the E.U. data privacy laws. As will be explained, what is covered under the DPA is far broader than what investigative firms likely thought; rather than relating solely to identifying information that if mishandled could lead to identity theft, the gathering of background information itself (under the scenar...

Cap-and-trade schemes have been implemented across the US, Europe, Japan and New Zealand, but just one offers the kind of liquidity and transparency that most futures traders need: namely futures on European Union Allowances (EUA), which are allowances issued by EU member states under the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme. Current EU laws place caps on the energy sector, while other industrial sectors will be capped over time. To trade EUAs and Certified Emission Reduction certificates, you need at least a rudimentary understanding of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which was signed in the early 1990s by nearly all the world's countries, including the US. Traders also should keep an eye on climate change talks as negotiators from all UNFCCC coun...
