CLIFTON, Maine -- Twenty-three years ago, Peter and Julie Beckford bought a nearly 60-acre wooded spread off a stretch of Route 180 known locally as Rebel Hill Road and began pursing their version of the American Dream. Over the years, they built a home and established Rebel Hill Farm, an organic perennial flower and maple sugar business. They raised their sons on the farm and grow almost all of their food there. They have added a greenhouse and several other small buildings, including small cabins a 10-minute walk from their house used as a writing studio and space for farm apprentices and other guests.
Beginning this summer, some wounded veterans and their families will be vacationing on the Outer Banks for free thanks to a program recently established by two Hatteras Island men. Kevin McCabe and John McGee, both sons of Marines, are working with Wounded Warrior Battalion-East, a barracks for ill and injured Marines at Camp Lejeune, N.C. The base chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart is serving as a conduit for donations.

The James G. Boyd Funeral Home, located at 2324 Sistrunk Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FIa., was founded by James Calvin Boyd and wife Corine Howard Boyd, now deceased. The Boyd family which includes 11 children has owned and operated one of Broward County's most respected funeral home operations for almost four decades, beginning in 1971. The Boyd's have a long and rich family tradition in the funeral home business stemming back to the fifties. James C. Boyd, Sr. worked for his father at the family business in Palatka, Fla. from 1957 to 1964 and co-established D. A. Boyd & Sons Funeral Home in Winter Haven, Fla. along with his late brother John A. Johnson attended the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine where he was named Outstanding Internal Medicine Student. After graduation in 1994, Johnson completed his residence at Tulsa's St. Francis Hospital. He began his practice at the Warren Clinic and established a Tulsa home with his wife and two sons.
TOPSHAM - Wright-Pierce, a New England-based civil and environmental engineering firm with offices in Portland and Topsham, has announced the recipients of the 2006 Wright-Pierce College Scholarship Program. The eight children of Wright-Pierce employees to receive the honor are Andrew Laskey, Emily Stiles, Erica Kidd, Erin Berger, Jamie Mauro, Meghan McVeigh, Sara Preble and Tyler Barnes. The awards continue a practice which began in 1962 when the firm established a scholarship fund for the sons and daughters of Wright- Pierce employees. Over the years, the scholarships have been awarded to more than 50 students.
