According to the complaint, the Essex County Department of Corrections (DOC) first suspended Beshier and then terminated her on the grounds that wearing of a khimar (a head scarf) violated its uniform policy. The suit filed seeks a court order requiring Essex County to adopt a policy that reasonably accommodates the religious observances and practices of employees and prospective employees subject to the Essex County DOC s uniform policy for corrections officers.

MAYWOOD -- The incoming Republican mayor and council members said Wednesday that they are preparing to introduce a series of changes in the borough - including publishing videos of council meetings, appointing residents to citizen advisory committees and maybe even hiring police officers -- starting from the day they are sworn in.
Such adjustments, they said, would respond to what they interpreted as a clear mandate for change in Tuesday's decisive election, which awarded them control of the governing body for the first time in eight years.
