Indeed, controversy has dogged The Birth of a Nation for nearly a century, and whatever organization attempts to book this film does so at its own peril. On March 22, 1976, the Syracuse Cinephile Society's Monday-night "Classics of the Silent Screen" movie series encountered some resistance from local picketers during a Birth screening at the then-new Civic Center's Carrier Theater. Legend has it that Cinephile founder Phil Serling told the press, "I'm Jewish and I've shown movies made by {Nazi propagandist} Leni Reifenstahl!" Current Cinephile president Gerry Orlando remarks that "back then Cinephile films were more 'cinema society' type of screenings, not the kind of 'casual night out' films our Monday-night audiences now enjoy {at the Spaghetti Warehouse}. Plus 1976 was a far differe...

Perils in Nude Modeling (10 minutes). A sad-sack student (John Merriman) struggles with his muse during an art class on female anatomy, which is presided by a tyrannical, Erich von Stroheim-styled teacher (Garry Peters) who barks, "Eyes on subject!" But the undraped model (Estephania LeBaron) on display, a seemingly unattainable goddess, just might have her own eyes on the student-especially if he can capture on canvas "the real she," so to speak. Scott Rice wrote, edited and directed this frantic, funny item at the University of Texas at Austin Film Studios, and Rice's eye for detail (LeBaron's nudity is handled quite tastefully) and Swisswatch timing, along with Pat Murray's sprightly music score, provide mirthful results. Maybe the sleeper of the festival-and it's not even nominated ...

The DVD edition of "Queen Kelly," a famously abandoned late silent feature of 1928-29 that starred Gloria Swanson under the wayward direction of Erich von Stroheim, appends a memento that now seems priceless.
It's a television curio of the early 1960s that anticipates the usefulness of DVD supplements and makes you regret the scarcity of such firsthand recollections when vintage movies are being reconsidered.

And if I ever had the opportunity to visit Treasure Island," he adds, "it would be nice to discover a chest containing the lost directors' cuts of [Orson Welles]'s The Magnificent Ambersons and Erich von Stroheim's Greed." And if Richard Peter- ' son ever does discover those films, you can surely expect to see them on screen at the Rafael film Center.

One moviegoer's spirited black comedy can be another's soul- sucking downer, never to be craved again.
The subject comes up, courtesy the Normal Theater's themed offerings this weekend: a pair of black-and-white depressants that just so happen to be two of our most beloved dark reveries - "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" (tonight, Friday) and "Sunset Boulevard" (Saturday, Sunday).

Though they cannot supplant nor replace other methodologies, films can possibly raise new questions, provide different perspectives, and reveal unique ways of knowing about seminal subject, at least by comparison to the standard fare of academic analysis. Each one, "ethics" and "leadership," draw upon substantially different intellectual literatures, scholarly methodologies, traditional assumptions, and disciplinary perspectives. Film, often far better than social science literature, may provide a more "holistic account" of not only individual lives, but entire situations where ethical leadership is practiced. Finally, ethical leadership includes the use of symbols. Symbols abound throughout, thus giving the story meaning, depth, and power beyond simply "a typical feel-good" movie. List...
