A speech by Utah Governor Olene S. Walker is presented. Some may wonder about the connection between religious freedom and the Legislature's decision to issue school vouchers. The issue of religion and public education was a critical point of contention in the efforts for the State of Utah to adopt a constitution and gain statehood. Her great fear is that vouchers will further encourage these stable families to leave public schools and that the overall quality of education in these urban schools will diminish as a result. Even if the practical problems with a voucher system are resolved, there is still a problem with equal treatment under the law. She hopes that after the voucher debate is over, regardless of how the vote goes, they can earnestly work together to find ways to improve th...

Last week, New York became the sixth state -- plus the District of Columbia -- to allow same-sex marriage. The slow march toward equality continues.
We won't again make the case today for why same-sex couples deserve equal treatment under the law. If you are among the declining number of people who believe otherwise, a couple of paragraphs will not convince you.

IN 1992, my friends David Shumate and Andy Ragland met each other. I do not know if it was love at first sight, but a year later, they made a commitment as lifelong partners. Over the years, I have known them to be a loving couple devoted to each other and active in the Methodist Church and community affairs. In mid-March, they joined Pat Link and Shelia Chambers, who had petitioned the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals to strike down the statute that defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
These courageous, insightful women, who have been in a loving, committed relationship since 1981, took the bold step of asking for equal treatment under the law. They are asking for the simple equality guaranteed by our state constitution, a right that many disenfranchised gro...

When Oregon's Multnomah County opened its doors to same-sex couples seeking marriage licenses, Washington residents had to know a lawsuit against their state was not far behind.
The ACLU, on behalf of 11 same-sex couples, sued Washington state on Thursday. The lawsuit seeks to overturn the 1998 Defense of Marriage Act. The ACLU believes, and we agree, that the federal and state constitutional demands for equal rights should trump this 1998 law that defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

On May 3, the US Embassy in Sana'a issued a statement on the political violence in South Yemen that claimed eight lives last week. The United States stressed that "Yemen's unity depends on its ability to guarantee every citizen equal treatment under the law." What the Yemeni government calls unity, the protesters call occupation.
Somali pirates hide their mother ships in Yemen's waters. NATO Commander, Admiral Mark Fitzgerald, said the pirates receive "a lot of the logistical supplies" from Yemen. Pirates say they receive information on ship location from Yemeni collaborators.
The United States says it supports "a stable, unified, and democratic Yemen." Yemenis chose a democratic system in 1990, but they haven't seen it yet. What exists in Yemen is a criminal enterprise that bombs its o...

WASHINGTON, Feb. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The words "EQUAL JUSTICE UNDER LAW" are famously chiseled above the main portico of the U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington D.C. Sitting here in the great Twin Cities, where today the Republican convention kicks off, I am reminded of one of the most important distinctions between the parties; their stance on taxes. In this election, Democrats have argued that high income earners should shoulder a disproportionate share of the tax burden. Republicans, conversely, have argued for and received relatively lower tax rates on capital gains from business activity and some forms of personal income; their argument has been that lower taxes on business and investment leads to job and income growth in the economy at large. Both of these positions ignore a fundamental principle of our democracy and of justice in general: equal treatment under the law.
The fundamental moral and political philosophy of equality means that each...

CHURCH INTERVENTION IS FOREIGN MEDDLING
The driving force behind the consistent denial of equality, specifically for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, has been religious doctrine. Who controls the United States and its political machine? Is it the president, Senate, Congress or "free" citizens of this country? The answer, overwhelmingly and unmistakably, is the Vatican! Our inalienable right to equal treatment under the law is being forestalled by a foreign country!

The Monroe County Bar Association has extended the deadline for nominations for the Charles F. Crimi Award that is presented annually at the Legal Services Awards Luncheon. The deadline is 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14.
The Crimi Award acts as a memorial to Charles F. Crimi, and his fearless and unselfish dedication to the principle that the poor and disadvantaged are entitled to equal treatment under the law, according to the MCBA. The bar association hopes the award will not only honor Crimi's memory but, also, be an incentive to other practicing attorneys to emulate his high ideals, dignity and absolute dedication to the fair administration of justice in our community.
