If gratitude padded a bank account, Lilly Ledbetter would be one rich woman. Thanks to her, Americans now have a new law affirming that they are entitled to regardless of their gender, race, religion or disability. But Ledbetter isn't a rich woman and her bank account remains diminished from the nearly two decades her employer, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., paid her less than what men in her position earned. And through her retirement, Ledbetter's pension and Social Security will reflect the reduced rate of pay.
For women across the country, today is an important day - the nationwide observance of Equal Pay Day. The date symbolizes how far into 2011 women must work to earn what men earned in 2010. According to the most recent U.S. Census Bureau statistics, women who work in full-time, year-round jobs in Maine earn, on average, 76.7 cents for every dollar earned by men working in those jobs.
Michigan enacted a law prohibiting discrimination between employees based on sex in 1972," said Judy Karandjeff, executive director of the Michigan Women's Commission. Since 1949, California law has mandated equal pay for equal work. Every year since then, however, study after study has shown women continue to suffer from pay discrimination. After more than 55 years of toothless regulation and failed results, it is clear that the goal we should all share won't be reached without changing the law. Despite this, 10 months ago, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill that would have strengthened the simple premise of equal pay for equal work.
