A women's shelter in Columbia has agreed to pay $103,000 to resolve a lawsuit filed by the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The EEOC alleged the shelter wrongly retaliated against two employees who reported concerns about sexual harassment by the organization's executive director.
According to the EEOC lawsuit, filed in federal court in Jefferson City, against True North Inc., co-directors Nancy Gause and Tracie Lawson told the organization's board members that Executive Director Leigh Voltmer had inappropriately touched staff members several times. Gause said she brought up the complaints on behalf of employees she supervised. True North used to be known as Comprehensive Human Services Inc.

Where the plaintiff was terminated from her employment as a police officer, she filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleging sexual harassment and discrimination. The plaintiff also filed a grievance with the Attorney Disciplinary Committee following the release of information to the media relating to her termination.
