There is a simple treatment for women at risk of pre-term delivery that can reduce the risk of cerebral palsy in their babies by nearly half. It was recently found through a decades-long study mat mothers given an infusion of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) decreased the risk for cerebral palsy in their newboms by 45 percent. Healthcare providers consider the treatment a way of stabilizing an expectant mother's blood vessels that in turn keeps sufficient oxygen supplied to the brain of the baby.

AMES, Iowa - Iowa State running back Alexander Robinson had tried cold tubs, Epsom salt baths and deep-tissue massages in an effort to stay healthy. So when his parents sent him a beginner's yoga DVD last month, Robinson figured it couldn't hurt to try it out.
This intense salt diet caused the blood pressure to rise, and the person's head would begin to throb. This throbbing was often reduced by taking a dose of Epsom Salt and grapefruit juice. The chemical name for Epsom Salt is magnesium sulfate. Magnesium is the mineral that causes relaxation of the blood vessels, thus reducing the elevated pressure. In fact, magnesium is used intravenously today to reduce the blood pressure of pregnant women who are experiencing elevated pressure during delivery. This folk remedy is not far off from scientific reality.
Epsom Salt baths, saunas, and steam/fume baths increase perspiration and eliminate excess toxins through the skin (They should be avoided when one has high blood pressure, heart, or kidney problems). I have a Sago palm in my backyard, and it started to turn brown in February. What should I have done? This is the second one that has turned brown over the winter. I tried putting a plastic bag over it to provide some protection, but the wind blew it off. Should I use burlap? I also gave it an Epsom salt dousing in late November as advised by a friend in Louisiana who has a yard full of them. Mine seem to do fine until late winter. Please assure me I can grow Sago palms in Virginia since I love them. - Maxine Adams, Norfolk
Dear Dr. Gott: Last year, I found out that my sister-in-law had an eating disorder. At first I thought she was making herself throw up, but during a recent visit, I accidentally found a bag of Epsom salt with a cup and spoon in it she had put in my guest bathroom. She is 29 years old, 5 feet 8 inches and now weighs 110 pounds. She lost more than 150 pounds in the past 18 months but hasn't changed her eating habits. I have seen her eat a 3-pound hamburger with everything on it and then rush into the bathroom .
