  • A Shona sculpture entitled "The Ministry" sits in the senior pastoral office of the Corona Community African-Methodist-Episcopal Church and symbolizes the thrust of Rev. Charles Lee-Johnson's spiritual, professional and personal commitment to social change, educational empowerment and functional families. The intertwined arms, legs, bodies and heads of the figures in the distinctive African art mimic the connectedness humanity shares and the legacies simple and sophisticated leaders left, asserted the Pomona man who is a nationally renowned social-action minister, master's of social work activist and celebrated lecturer.

  • The United Nations is doing no better. Just five years after it was created, Winston Churchill recognized that it was not working. "Unless some effective supranational government can be set up and brought quickly into action," he said, "the prospects of peace and human progress are dark and doubtful." The U.N. is a creature of the nation-states. 'The people" really have nothing to do with it. It is not a real government, has no real power to act, and has little money. What must we do to establish a global governance structure that can handle these grave problems? Mahatma Gandhi gave us the answer in 1942 when he said that we must create a "world federation of free nations," making it clear that "on no other basis can the problems of the modern world be solved." Many great thinkers, lead...

  • Traen sus valores, piedad y sentimiento de familia, además respeto y una gran devoción a la Virgen María", agregó el jueves pasado como parte de su charla sobre la nueva forma de ser iglesia en Estados Unidos ("New Way of being church in America"). "Se encargan de dirigir los esfuerzos para desarrollar la capacidad de las diócesis y parroquias a fin de darle la bienvenida a los extranjeros y responder a sus necesidades", según plantea la oficina para cuidado pastoral de inmigrantes y refugiados de la Conferencia Episcopal de Estados Unidos. "Llevamos el ministerio a los camp...

  • A suspended AME reverend filed a complaint this week against Presiding Prelate Bishop John R. Bryant accusing him of slander and using his power to influence a ministerial judicial committee decision. Accused pedophile, Reverend Sylvester Lauderniill said Bryant is using his "power, authority and position of trust" to impact the outcome of a retrial in the case set for October 16. If Bryant has his way, then Laudermill will be permanently relieved of his pastoral duties within the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

  • During a Lenten service on repentance, Rev. Thomas began by reading a pastoral letter from the Right Rev. Bishop Michie Klusmeyer, the Episcopal Bishop of West Virginia. The Bishop wrote, "We strive to relate to one another, in all our diversities, in a new way that is blind to color and freed from the limitations of our enculturated thinking. It is a day for all of us to practice seeing, more and more, the face of Christ Jesus, the very image of God, on each person we meet. I can only speak about me today, and I take the phrase "enculturated thinking" very much to heart. I have done whatever I can do in my life, especially as my awareness grew, to become especially aware of my enculturated thinking that puts me in a place that moves me away from persons of color or makes me fearful. I...

  • In a dramatic and abrupt resignation speech to the Episcopal Church's House of Bishops in New Orleans last September, [Jeffrey Steenson] told his fellow brother and sister bishops: "My conscience is deeply troubled" and acknowledged that his "radical journey of faith" might seem "foolish," "disloyal" or even "an abandonment. Steenson thinks he's fulfilling history. He says he's adopted a "radical solution" to the major theological problem of his life and times. And the historical irony isn't lost on the former bishop with a PhD in patristics from Oxford University. "There's something impish in me that says I get to put my thumb in [Henry VIII]'s eye," a smiling Steenson says, remembering an enormous portrait of Henry VIII he once encountered on a daily basis. On the subject of homosexu...

  • The Pastoral Provision issued by Pope John Paul II in 1980 allows Episcopal clergymen, even those who are married, to become Catholic priests on a case-by-case basis. The provision was a response to requests from those who opposed the Episcopal Church's decision in 1976 to ordain women and who sought reunion with the church in Rome.

  • LOS ANGELES The Episcopal bishop of Los Angeles warned that priests and other clergy at two breakaway Southland parishes could be permanently deposed from ordained ministry unless they return to the national church. In a strongly worded pastoral letter to be read Sunday at all Episcopal parishes in the six-county Los Angeles Episcopal Diocese, the Rt. Rev. J. Jon Bruno ordered the priests to cease all ministry after they declared that their parishes were leaving the national Episcopal Church.
