The author recently got on a tear about repurposing information, whether it's electronic content, virtual worlds, blogs, or just email discussion lists. Along lines of creating a new resource from people's daily activities, she ran into a couple of intriguing articles. One from Lancet Infectious Diseases discussed how the online game World of Warcraft is helping epidemiologists study human behavior during an epidemic. Another news item she ran across was about a creative use of the CAPTCHA utility -- those boxes on some Web sites that require you to retype hard-to-read characters to confirm that you are, in fact, human and not a spambot. The author wonders what other crossovers exist between the virtual world of electronic content and the real world as people know it.
It's an epidemic in our game," Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt says. "This game has become one where everybody looks at it (as), 'It's about me.'
Losing to the worst teams in a league is apparently becoming a Pittsburgh epidemic. Carolina, which entered Monday's game at Mellon Arena with by far the NHL's worst record, jumped to an early lead and held on for a surprising 3-2 victory over the Penguins.

Poor attendance is epidemic in schools Getting students in the Buffalo Public Schools to stay home from school is hardly an accomplishment. Staying home on an early release day, especially when it comes after a weekend and before a day off, is a way of life for these students. Most high schoolers consider early release as a day off. Only the very dedicated or maybe athletes who have a game that day bother to show up.

Students from across the state will try to dance their way to the winner's circle Thursday when the Dance Dance Revolution West Virginia State Tournament kicks off at the state Capitol. In West Virginia, the big push behind the dancing game in schools is to help combat the state's childhood obesity epidemic.
On Tuesday, 144 kids called in sick to Uintah High School in Vernal. By Thursday, that number had risen to 245, or 20 percent of the school's student body. Alarmed about a possible swine-flu epidemic, the school scratched its Thursday night football game. On Friday, the school canceled all extra-curricular activities throughout the weekend.
With apologies to Lucas Glover, the rebirth of David Duval was by far the best thing that happened to golf at Bethpage. Between Phil Mickelson's chivalrous departure and the slump epidemic rampant among the sub-Tiger elite, the game has never been more desperate for a best supporting actor.
Green Bay About the best thing the Green Bay Packers can say about their season thus far is that they have avoided major discord in the locker room and are still playing the game as one. During his Monday news conference, coach Mike Sherman admitted that times were tough for him and his 1-7 team, which shares the worst record in the National Football League with the Houston Texans and faces another tough challenge Sunday at 6-2 Atlanta. But he said the fact the team had hung together and played competitively in every game despite an injury epidemic gave him hope that a turnaround was possible the second half of the season.
