After opening statements in a Boone County trial, the court granted a directed verdict in favor of two homeowners and a construction company whom neighbors had blamed for their personal injury and property damage claims stemming from a renovation project.
The court found that plaintiffs' environmental expert relied on statistics rather than actual testing to show the renovated house had lead-based paint, and plaintiffs would therefore be unable to prove causation for their alleged injuries.

According to statistics compiled by the state Department of Environmental Protection, Mercer County generated 948,666 tons of solid waste in 2006, and recycled a total of 577,662 tons, the equivalent of 60.1 percent. Because there are no landfills operating in Mercer County, all garbage must be transported elsewhere.
