Despite increasing awareness about the dangers of radon, more Columbia residents should get their homes tested for the presence of the potentially deadly substance, said Michael Goldschmidt, a University of Missouri Extension housing and environmental design specialist. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, one in 15 U.S. homes contains high levels of radon, a gas that is released from the breakdown of uranium in the soil. Radon is responsible 21,000 deaths a year and is thought to be the leading cause of lung cancer for nonsmokers.

It moves the Food City she manages in this town closer to becoming state- certified as an "Environmental Leader. Hewison of Hebron has been working with Roy Krout, an environmental specialist with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection's Office of Innovation and Assistance, for about a year toward the goal of getting the store classified as a "green grocer."

State officials have scrambled for weeks to clean up a rash of backyard oil spills, as melting snow and ice have fallen on heating- oil tanks and broken filters and fuel lines. It's been ridiculous," said Ann Hemenway, oil and hazardous materials specialist for the Department of Environmental Protection. Hemenway and a cleanup crew spent Monday digging snow and contaminated soil from the backyard of a home in Baldwin.

CHESAPEAKE - George Arthur Brockman Sr., affectionately known as "Face," passed away peacefully, Jan. 9, 2008, in the VA Medical Center in Hampton. He was born Aug. 18, 1950, in Greenville, S.C., to the late Alexander Brockman Sr. and Elizabeth Rice Brockman. George was an environmental protection specialist at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and retired in March 2007 after 37 years.

Metropolitan Milwaukee residents will breathe air that is sootier than federal health standards for years to come, despite Gov. Jim Doyle's claims that the entire state will meet tougher new air- quality standards, according to a veteran state air specialist and the Sierra Club. In December, Doyle asked the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to consider that all Wisconsin counties will be in compliance for soot, or particle pollution, by a federal 2014 deadline.
