Despite increasing awareness about the dangers of radon, more Columbia residents should get their homes tested for the presence of the potentially deadly substance, said Michael Goldschmidt, a University of Missouri Extension housing and environmental design specialist. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, one in 15 U.S. homes contains high levels of radon, a gas that is released from the breakdown of uranium in the soil.
