EL MONTE - Citing concerns about airborne lead from airplane fuel, federal officials will begin monitoring air quality outside a school located near the El Monte Airport.
The monitoring is part of an Environmental Protection Agency plan announced Tuesday to study the air quality outside schools across the country in an effort to reduce students' exposure to dangerous toxins.

The landfill will be a whole lot safer with the cover them it is now," says David Miller, the Sandia engineer who manages the landfill. "But because of litigation from one citizens' group, we've had to put these plans on hold.
Some of the stainless steel well screens are also corroded and clogged. Sandia engineers say that corrosion is responsible for the chromium and nickel that have been found in water samples at higher levels than drinking-water standards allow. [Robert H. Gilkeson] suspects that these levels are too high to be accounted for by corroded screens alone. Bentonite clay from the drilling process clogs many screens, "hiding the contaminants (the wells) are intended to detect, especially radionuclides," he says. The same drilling process was used in Los Alamos, and those...

EPA is partially approving and partially disapproving a revision to the Oklahoma State Implementation Plan (SIP) submitted by the State of Oklahoma through the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality on February 19, 2010, intended to address the regional haze requirements of the Clean Air Act (CAA). In addition, EPA is partially approving and partially disapproving a portion of a revision to the Oklahoma SIP submitted by the State of Oklahoma on May 10, 2007 and supplemented on December 10, 2007 to address the requirements of CAA section 110(a)(2)(D)(i)(II) as it applies to visibility for the 1997 8- hour ozone and 1997 fine particulate matter National Ambient Air Quality Standards. This CAA requirement is intended to prevent emissions from one state from interfering with the visib...

AUGUSTA - The Maine Board of Environmental Protection on Thursday presented a plan that would require the former owner of the HoltraChem factory in Orrington to excavate two large landfills and remove millions of pounds of contaminated soil from the riverfront site.
But in a departure from the state Department of Environmental Protection's stance, the board's plan would allow three other waste landfills to remain on the HoltraChem site, albeit with the installation of additional safety and environmental monitoring measures.

The EPA is proposing amendments to the national emissions standards for hazardous air pollutants for Mineral Wool Production and Wool Fiberglass Manufacturing to address the results of the residual risk and technology review that the EPA is required to conduct by the Clean Air Act. The proposed Mineral Wool Production amendments include emissions limits for carbonyl sulfide, hydrogen fluoride and hydrochloric acid for cupolas; add combined collection and curing processes as new regulated sources; and include emissions limits for formaldehyde, phenol and methanol for combined collection and curing operations. Modifications to the testing and monitoring and related notification, recordkeeping and reporting requirements are also proposed. The proposed amendments for the Wool Fiberglass Man...
