When Ryan Rounkles graduated from the University of Missouri- Columbia more than a year ago, he was ready to relocate. Using major job search networks, he was looking for an entry-level position in the biotech field.
But Rounkles eventually realized that he didn't have to look far. He now works at Analytical Bio-Chemistry Laboratories Inc. in Columbia as an assistant chemist, a job a schoolmate from MU recommended to him.

But he phoned far fewer possible clients and candidates than the Dallas concern expected. "He was let go on the third day," says Jeff Kaye, president and CEO. His performance didn't match "what he thought he was capable of doing.

Before she lost her job as a full-time health-department case worker last November, she was making $23 an hour. Now she's paid $10 an hour as a part- time assistant coordinator in an after-school program.
From here on out, it will be a struggle," said Valle, 32, of Oswego, Ill., whose husband lost his $50,000 government job and still is out of work after a year. "I don't feel like there's any place we can go to get what we were getting paid.
