The rise in ethics and social responsibility scrutiny has attracted a lot of debate pertaining to the prevalence of such practices in SMEs. Concomitantly, the emergence of women participation in new ventures has raised interest among the researchers to examine the gender variations in regards to ethical and social responsibility considerations in business given that there is evidence suggesting women are generally more ethical than men. The present study attempts to explore the prevalence of such practices among Malaysian SME entrepreneurs and subsequently examine the gender differences in terms of the importance placed by female and male entrepreneurs in regards to these practices. This article presents a novel approach to measure entrepreneurial optimism and realism and their relationship to individual demographics, entrepreneurial characteristics, and learning reflections on new venture formation. Measures of optimism from psychology and a measure of realism developed by the authors were used to determine if entrepreneurs are optimistic and/or realistic, a majority are. This study contributes to the literature on serial and novice entrepreneurs by focusing on the process of entrepreneurship and the role of different knowledge structures in this process. We use theories from cognitive psychology that relate to experts and novices, and their use of prior knowledge in the creation of knowledge structures. Using a sample of 121 novice and serial entrepreneurs, we find that knowledge structures, as a function of prior experience in running a business venture, do not play a role in differentiating these entrepreneurs regarding the process of entrepreneurship. The implications and limitations of the study are discussed.

He grew up around the carpet industry and chemicals and factoring. Curtin said Bankers Advocate Group is the third company he has owned. First, he owned a manufacturing plant for six years -- a cultured marble plant in Orlando, FL. He said Bankers Advocate do exit strategies -- they help people get their businesses ready to sell. Archived transcripts of 57 women entrepreneurs were qualitatively (using content analysis) and quantitatively (using canonical correlation) analyzed. Content analysis was conducted to create nominal scales, which could be quantitatively investigated with canonical correlation analysis. The goal was to determine the relationship between women entrepreneurs' support and success from both actual and perceptual perspectives. Analysis supported research propositions suggesting women's perceptions of support have a greater effect on their success in entrepreneurial ventures than actual support, regardless of whether traditional measures or women's own perceptions of success were considered. Women's motivations toward entrepreneur ship were strongly correlated with perceptions of success. Addi...

Despite growing interest in the difficulties encountered by ethnic entrepreneurs, very little research has yet been done on the subject. This article attempts to fill the gap. A total of 715 Chinese, Italian, Indian/Sikh, Jewish, and Vietnamese entrepreneurs from Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver were surveyed for the research. The results show that ethnic businesses tend to face the same problems as other businesses, which consequently does not appear to justify the development of support programs specifically for ethnic entrepreneurs. However, this study of established businesses does not consider failed or nascent businesses, which may have experienced additional problems. Further research is required to examine these issues. Also, given the unique social and business dynamics that ex...
