Not that it ever lacked credibility, but the regional economic development entity Greater New Orleans Inc. cemented its integrity last week when it released the second part of its three-pronged analysis of the impact of the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe.
The first part, which was released in October, focused on the oil spill's short-term economic effects on the state's fisheries. GNO Inc. will evaluate how the disaster has damaged the Louisiana brand later this year.

The enormous amount of money changing hands in modern government-run lotteries attracts an equally impressive number of fraud and theft opportunities. In the US, state and multistate lottery operations must apply fundamental internal control principles to protect the sponsoring governmental entity, citizens, and players from scandal being associated with sweepstakes games. In this article the authors describe some of the internal controls the Texas Lottery Commission uses to maintain the security and integrity of its lottery system. Though these controls are specifically for lottery operations, the underlying tenets on which the controls have been built are useful in any organization as is the importance of considering external relationships in the process of designing a control system....

LANL hasn't exactly gained a reputation as an employee-friendly workplace. A 2003 Department of Energy investigation concluded that lab managers created a climate of fear in which employee complaints were discouraged. The year before, the lab retaliated against two whistle-blowers who exposed credit-card fraud at the facility by removing them from their jobs. In the late 1990s, the lab was sued by approximately 100 employees over layoffs at the facility and also was hit with claims of employment discrimination against Hispanic workers.
Teresa Connaughton, the immediate past president of the University, Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE) at Los Alamos, who spoke at the meeting, says UC is the best option for LANL in order for it to preserve its scientific and academic integrity....

The author was not surprised that the executive council of the Professional/Scholarly Publishing Division of the Association of American Publishers created Partnership for Research Integrity in Science and Medicine (PRISM). Creating a new entity gives them attention, even if the message and the players are essentially the same ones used year after year. The publishing lobby has always been an obstacle to OA, but OA started anyway. The lobbying group is putting a higher gloss on the rhetoric, but remember that the publishing lobby has always had access to spin doctors. The PRISM members know this: Members already allow the same type of OA that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) puts forth as the mandate for the research it funds.

[Ken Burns] is recognized as one of the premier documentarians of our time with award winning miniseries such as "The American Civil War," "Baseball," and "Unforgivable Blackness," all receiving Emmy Awards. His work had been noted for their detail, historical accuracy, and cinematography.
Burns as it turns out, has a blind spot when it comes to Hispanics. Not only did his WWII documentary not have any Hispanics in it, the accompany book with the film made no mention of Hispanics in the 415 pages of history about WWII. In Burns' other documentaries "Jazz" and "Baseball" there to he ignored the contributions of Hispanics.
From the outset PBS and [Paula Kerger] downplayed the whole issue, not taking this affront as a serious issue. Taking one meeting with the Defend The Honor Coalition Ke...
