  • IT WAS SEPT. 12, 2002, just a year and a day after the attacks on America, and I was in northern France, in the province of Normandy. The Greatest Generation recognized Normandy by other names - Omaha, Utah, Gold, Sword and Juneau - beaches where the Allied invasion of Europe was launched on June 6, 1944, better known to the world as D- Day. Normandy transported me to another time, when a good fight raged over freedom, and the destiny of Europe, and ultimately the world, hung on its outcome. At the battlegrounds of Omaha Beach and Pointe Du Hoc, time and tides have washed away the carnage but could not erase the aura of sacrifice that permeated the air, for these sacred grounds owned the final moments of many young lives. Standing watch like a sentry over Omaha Beach and the English Cha...

  • TRANSIT-nightmare wise, and barring a crash, about the only thing we can imagine that would be worse than being stuck in a small jet cabin overnight on the runway would be how those European travelers were stuck in a train beneath the English Channel this past weekend. Chunnel or tarmac? Take your claustrophobic pick.

  • It was my last day in Athens after spending several weeks producing two exciting television shows on Greece. My brain was fried. I was concerned I was getting a cold and I felt that getting sick was God's way of telling me to slow down. Instead of heading out on a shoot, I ditched work and spent the day lounging poolside on the rooftop of my hotel. Thankfully, it worked. The next day, I felt recharged. After 30 years of travel, I've figured out what I need to do to stay healthy away from home. For me, wellness starts before I leave. An early-trip cold used to be a given until I learned this trick: Plan as if you're leaving two days before you really are. Keep that last 48-hour period sacred (apart from your normal work schedule), even if it means being frenzied before your fa...

  • So what's up with these Black movies with titles that use bad English? Some people call it "Ebonics" or "Black English," but "bad grammar" is what it actually is. "He Got Game" and "She Hate Me" (which both came courtesy of Spike Lee) were bad enough. Now we get "How She Move. As part of their "Where Is...?" series, Jet magazine printed an update on Al B. Sure!, who had hits in the late '80s and early '90s such as "Nite and Day," "Off on Your Own (Girl)" and "Right Now." He also sang with Barry White, James Ingram and El DeBarge on "The secret Garden," featured on Quincy Jones' "Back on the Block" album. (He calls that "the greatest experience of my life.") MEMORIES: "Let's Get Married" (Al Green), "(Olivia) Lost and Turned Out" (the Whispers), "Who's Making Love?" (Johnnie Taylor), "S...

  • DOVER, England -- He had nothing above him but four tanks of kerosene and nothing below him but the cold waters of the English Channel. But Yves Rossy leapt from a plane and into the record books on Friday, crossing the channel on a homemade jet-propelled wing. Rossy jumped from the plane about 8,200 feet over Calais, France, blasting across the narrow body of water and deploying his parachute over the South Foreland lighthouse, delighting onlookers who dotted Dover's famous white cliffs, cheering and waving as Rossy came into view.
