  • By Les Jackson All mineral oils are graded by the Society of Automotive Engineers, or SAE. These grading criteria are based upon the expected load and temperature ranges under which a given engine will be used. Viscosity grades are available in a wide range. These grades are most frequently seen in forms such as 5W-30, 10W-30, etc., in multiviscosity blends. Straight viscosities are also available: 20 W, 30W, etc.

  • Dear Tom and Ray: My husband and I had to go out of town for work for a few weeks, so we left our 14-year-old daughter with an 18- year-old girlfriend of hers whom we trust(ed). Well, the 18-year- old brought over her boyfriend, "Einstein," without our knowledge. There was a strict no-boys policy from us, and many "Don't worries" from the two girls. They decided to try to start our Ford E250 V-8 three-quarter-ton Econoline van, which has a dead external fuel pump. Not knowing that, and seeing that the gas gauge read "Empty" (since it doesn't work either), they apparently assumed that it was out of gas. So Einstein took all the gas cans in the garage and dumped them into the van's gas tank. Living in northern Michigan, we use a variety of somewhat ancient tools, including lawn mowers, ch...

  • Dear Tom and Ray: I always change my own oil on my cars. I let the car sit overnight and change the engine oil the next day. My daughter said that it would be better to change the oil when the engine is hot, like when I get home from work. So, which is the preferred method?

  • Wheels: Last week you summarized that to select the proper oil for use in most vehicles look for the ILSAC starburst on the front of the container and for the proper (specified) SAE rating (viscosity). Is there more that should be checked? Halderman: Unfortunately, there are more specifications that are often specified by the vehicle manufacturers. Plus, there are concerns from owners of older vehicles. The newer engine oils are designed for the following:

  • Dear Tom and Ray: I live in interior Alaska, and it gets cold. How cold, you ask? It's been -40 F (that's negative 40) for the past week or so. My husband and I go back and forth as to whether to keep the car's block heater plugged in all the time, or whether to use a timer and run it only some of the time. I've heard that too much heat is bad for the oil. This morning I used the timer, and my car decided it was too cold for the transmission to engage. I was stuck. At -45 F, I don't have to go to work. At -40 F, I do (administrative policy). I want to use this as leverage to get my husband to let me keep my car plugged in more of the time. What do you think? -- Christie

  • We are adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for BRP- Powertrain GmbH & Co KG Rotax 912 S2, 912 S3, and 914 F2 reciprocating engines. This AD requires performing a one-time inspection of the oil system for leaks and a torque check of the oil pump attachment bolts, and if leaks are detected, performing a one-time inspection of the oil pump and engine valve train, on certain serial number (S/N) BRP- Powertrain GmbH & Co KG Rotax 912 S2, 912 S3, and 914 F2 reciprocating engines. This AD was prompted by the discovery that during engine production, some engines may not have had the oil pump attachment bolts torqued to specification. We are issuing this AD to prevent oil leaks, which could result in an in-flight engine shutdown and forced landing.
