  • Many CPA firms use engagement letters containing clauses that seek to minimize their exposure to legal liabilities for audits, reviews, compilations, and other professional services. In September 2006, the AICPA's Professional Ethics Executive Committee (PEEC) issued an exposure draft (ED) to interpret Rule 101 that updated a similar September 2005 exposure draft. In light of the comment letters and other evidence, the PEEC abandoned the exposure draft and, instead, issued Ethics Interpretation 501-8. This interpretation recognized that individual regulators have already adopted rules that restrict the use of certain clauses in audit or other attestation engagements. Mitigating risk through limited liability clauses is a complicated issue for US auditors. The AICPA's issuance of Ethics ...

  • Deliberative democracy derives its moral urgency from universal ideals, but relies on tools that pose practical tradeoffs stemming from the particularities of place and time. I argue for transcending a technique-oriented mindset focused on single methods, using examples from a foundation project to engage lesser heard voices into policies for young children and their families. Case study data from eight California counties are analyzed to identify frequently used civic engagement tools and their strengths and limitations. Drawing on this evidence, and on democratic and administrative theory that envisions citizens and experts as co-creators of public work, I develop strategic understandings for improving deliberative practices. The managerial wisdom needed has less to do with being au c...

  • A panel discussion on exploring the ways on how the board of directors and management can constructively engage one another in strategic thinking, risk analysis and ultimate formation of the major investment decisions companies face featuring several directors, CEO's and risk experts, including Carol Cartz, Robert Felton, Marissa Peterson, and Tom Plaskett and with moderation by J. P. Donlon, is presented. Among others, Bartz observes, many directors are hemmed in because there may be control issues or management may not have taken the time to set forth the principles for engagement with the executive team.

  • This study analyzes student discourse to assess the influence of multiple pedagogies on student engagement and understanding of diversity course content. Student discourse demonstrates the value of synthesizing lectures, class and small group discussions, videotapes, and other pedagogical practices. Students' high engagement with the course enhanced their ability to interpret media representation of diversity. Students' colorblind discourse on race and gender underscores the need for diversity courses to use videos and group discussion to help students become more media literate. Students are still reluctant to embrace a race/gender cognizant perspective.

  • Tribes may embody diverse kinship rules, structures, types of political authority, and lifestyles (sedentary, semi-nomadic, nomadic),5 which may be influenced by security and economic conditions and government policies.6 Thus, for instance, the Arab tribes of the Arabian Peninsula, Levant, and North Africa tended, at least traditionally, to be relatively egalitarian and non-hierarchical organizations lacking a well-developed leadership structure, while the Turkic tribes of the Central Asian steppes tended to be hierarchical, highly centralized organizations ruled by powerful chieftains.7 Although Arab tribal ideology is relatively egalitarian, in reality, major disparities in status, power, and wealth exist within and between tribes.8 Among settled tribes, sheikhly families and clans te...

  • Despite the call to engage employees in strategy making processes, empirical evidence that ties this engagement to financial performance has not been forthcoming. This study fills this gap by investigating whether involving employees in the strategy making process leads to a higher achievement of strategic goals and subsequently increased financial performance. Our findings suggest that the link between strategy making processes and financial performance may be underestimated unless strategic goals are included as a mediator. We also find environmental dynamism moderates the relationships we investigate. Under conditions of low dynamism, there is a stronger relationship between the engagement of employees and strategic goals related to innovation than under conditions of high dynamism. ...
