Appalachian Power Co.'s effort to help homeowners save money by making their dwellings more energy efficient is ramping up. Phil Moye, Appalachian Power spokesman, said the company has been promoting the program with direct-mail advertisements. He said television advertisements will be aired in the Beckley and Bluefield markets starting this month. Later, the campaign will be extended to the Kanawha Valley.

Brad Morton and Jack Starks, owners of two local green businesses, say they can certainly understand the frustrations and worries of big coal producers and users in the region over proposed federal legislation that would dramatically reduce carbon emissions through a cap-and-trade system. But, they say, they wouldn't mind a bump in their employment and sales figures in the future as an indirect result of such a law.
A lot of green is going into the $12.5 million science building project at Central Oregon Community College in Bend. Energy-saving techniques and green products are being used in construction, and the finished product will feature green science labs that use fewer fume hoods and less caustic materials, said Rick Hayes, COCC project manager.
