House Republicans on Tuesday failed to stop the enactment of new energy-saving standards for light bulbs that they portrayed as yet another example of big government interfering in people's lives.
The GOP bill to overturn the standards set to go into effect in January fell short of the two-thirds majority needed for passage. The vote was 233-193.

DAYTON -- Estimates from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are that just 12.5 percent of electronics waste in the U.S. is offered for recycling each year. But the volume is growing quickly as word gets around.
In Montgomery County, the Solid Waste District received 157 tons of electronic waste in 2005, 191 tons in 2006 and as of November, accepted 275 tons, said John Woodman, community program specialist with the district.

Four years ago, Congress developed new energy-saving standards for light bulbs. Republicans participated in that process and President George W. Bush signed the standards into law.
The new standards support more efficient incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescents and LEDs designed to improve lighting and save energy.
