Asia's appetite for coal to generate electricity and bake into coke for steelmaking could make 2011 a banner year for U.S. exports. It could boost business for railroads and shipping ports that transport coal, industry observers say.
Continued demand and supply limitations that caused surging U.S. coal exports to China and India last year are expected to increase exports to 86.5 million tons, up from 79.5 million tons in 2010, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The agency said 2009 shipments fell to 59.1 million tons, a result of the recession, from 81.5 million tons in 2008.

Shortly after his inauguration, President Obama instructed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reconsider California's request for a waiver of Clean Air Act preemption so that the state could enact air pollution standards for motor vehicles that were stricter than the national standards.14 The EPA under the Obama administration seems to be moving in the direction of regulating CO2.'5 These moves are welcomed by the international community.1 In Washington, D.C., there seems to be a growing sense of urgency among President Obama's policy advisors to work with China on climate change. In early February 2009, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited China with climate change at the top of her agenda.17 From February to June 2009, an impressive list of high officials and pol...

DURBAN, South Africa - The top U.N. climate official said Saturday she is confident industrial countries will renew their pledges to cut greenhouse gas emissions after their current commitments expire next year.
Further commitments under the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, an unshakable demand by poor countries, would avert a feared derailment of U.N. negotiations, but would mark little advancement toward the goal of a rapid and steep drop in worldwide carbon emissions blamed for climate change.

Homer Theodore Hurst, 92 years and 6 days, died quietly at home on October 31, 2011. He was born October 25, 1919, and grew up in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, the fourth of nine children of Theodore and Elva Harvey Hurst.
As an avid reader, his mother explored the world widely through books, including the classics, which she obtained through a rural library system. She named her second son after the Greek poet, Homer, and fostered his adventurous spirit. She instilled a love of learning in her children and encouraged them to develop their full potential through education. Homer's formal education was interrupted by work on the farm and also by global events. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and learned to fly, which became a life-long passion. He married Beverly May Arnold...

The authors use a growth accounting framework to examine growth of the rapidly developing Chinese economy. Their findings support the view that, although feasible in the intermediate term, China's recent pattern of extensive growth is not sustainable in the long run. The authors believe that China will be able to sustain a growth rate of 8 to 9 percent for an extended period if it moves from extensive to intensive growth. They next compare potential growth in China with historical developments in the United States and the European Union. They discuss the differences in production structure and level of development across the three economies that may explain the countries' varied intermediate-term growth prospects. Finally, the authors provide an analysis of "green" gross domestic produc...
