The Department of Energy should move quickly to approve a request by the University at Buffalo and Sen. Charles E. Schumer for a $120 million grant that would make UB a national center for materials research. The grant would go a long way toward strengthening that critical area of research in America and reducing our reliance on exports of these materials from China. UB has already demonstrated its expertise in the field.

West Virginia University and Republican U.S. Rep. David McKinley, one of two professional engineers in Congress, co-hosted a forum on the nation's evolving energy picture at WVU's National Research Center for Coal and Energy. McKinley and Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., said they planned to take what they heard back to fellow legislators in Washington.
