  • Oil prices climbed past $90 a barrel on Wednesday as the government reported a drop in the nation's crude supplies. Benchmark oil rose 66 cents to settle at $90.48 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In its weekly petroleum report, the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration said crude supplies dropped by 5.3 million barrels last week from the week before.

  • Oil rebounds after gas supplies drop NEW YORK (AP) -- Oil prices rebounded Wednesday, jumping back to $116 per barrel after the government reported a bigger-than-expected drop in U.S. gasoline supplies. But more signs of dwindling U.S. demand cast doubt on the rally's longevity. At the pump, a gallon of regular gasoline shed on average another penny overnight to $3.787, according to auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express. That's nearly 8 percent lower than record prices above $4 per gallon reached last month, but still 37 percent higher than a year ago; retail gasoline prices tend to lag behind crude oil's moves by several weeks. In its weekly inventory report, the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration said gasoline supplies fell by 6.4 milli...

  • The average U.S. retail price for regular-grade gasoline rose 2.9 cents the past week to nearly $1.72 a gallon, the highest in almost six months and 3 cents from a record, the U.S. Energy Department said Monday. The West Coast accounted for much of the increase, the Energy Department said in a weekly report. Gasoline surged an average of 7.4 cents in California and other Western states to $2.02 a gallon, the nation's highest. Los Angeles gasoline prices jumped 8.5 cents to $2.18.

  • NEW YORK - The Nasdaq composite and Standard & Poor's 500 indexes closed at five-year highs Wednesday after a positive report on the service sector pushed stocks modestly higher. A jump in oil prices, however, minimized Wall Street's gains. The Energy Department's weekly inventory report showed lower stockpiles of gasoline and distillate fuels, which drove up crude oil futures. A barrel of light crude settled at $67.07, up 84 cents, on the New York Mercantile Exchange - a 20 percent year-over- year rise.

  • The average U.S. retail price for regular-grade gasoline rose 1.9 cents the past week to $1.743 a gallon, the highest level in almost seven months, as refiners passed along soaring crude-oil costs. The sixth increase in seven weeks left the nationwide average 0.4 cent below a record set in August, the U.S. Energy Department said Monday in a weekly report. U.S. retail prices have jumped 26.5 cents, or 15 percent, this year.

  • NEW YORK Surging oil prices and a weak dollar prompted a spate of profit taking Wednesday, pushing stocks slightly lower in light holiday week trading. However, the minimal losses gave investors hope that Wall Street's yearend rally would extend into January. Crude oil futures moved higher after the Energy Department's latest weekly petroleum inventory report showed a dropoff in the nation's crude reserves, while reports of explosions in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh prompted a sharp rise on top of that. A barrel of light crude settled at $43.64, up $1.87, on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

  • Physical inactivity is a major contributing factor to prevalence of obesity and diabetes along the Texas-Mexico Border. Walking has been identified as a popular activity, but appropriate distances are seldom attained. This investigation was performed to evaluate self-monitored pedometer use, stage of change movement, and psychosocial mediators using walking as the physical activity. Seventy students enrolled in university kinesiology activity classes (age 22.53 ± 4.5, percent M/F 8/92) volunteered to wear pedometers for nine weeks and record weekly step averages. Weekly step averages were compared with an ANOVA and psychometric variables were analyzed with MANOVA. Participants completed pre- and post-intervention survey packets containing scales measuring exercise behavior change, barri...

  • The average U.S. pump price for regular gasoline rose 11.5 cents to a record $3.218 a gallon in the week ended Monday, the government said. Prices were 32.6 cents a gallon higher than a year ago, according to the weekly report from the U.S. Energy Department in Washington.

  • NEW YORK - Oil prices climbed back above $100 per barrel Thursday after a crackdown on protesters in Bahrain increased concerns that unrest there threatens to spread to OPEC heavyweights Saudi Arabia and Iran. Prices are also rising as Japan is expected to boost fuel imports as it recovers from its earthquake and tsunami disaster. And the world's largest oil consumer, the U.S., reported Thursday that unemployment claims dropped to the lowest level since July 2008, raising hopes that oil and gasoline demand will soon increase.
