TAIPEI -- The tablet war is pushing personal computer makers to focus more on research and development and web-based ecosystems to enable their products to stand out in an increasingly crowded market.
It's a marked shift for companies that have long relied on Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system and Intel Corp.'s chips - - a partnership referred to as Wintel -- in leading the way in the PC industry's core innovation.

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Confirming widespread rumors recently filling the blogosphere, Apple confirmed Tuesday that CEO Steve Jobs will deliver the keynote speech next week at the Cupertino, Calif., company's yearly Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.
And in a news release with a relatively surprising amount of detail for a company that likes to play things close to its vest, Apple said his speech would include details of its new "iCloud'' service. The maker of iPhones, iPads and other devices did not reveal anything else beyond referencing its "upcoming cloud services offering.'' Bloggers and news sites, however, have been buzzing for weeks that Apple has been in negotiations with major labels to allow iTunes customers to listen to their music collections over an Internet conn...

Neither Apple nor AT&T are talking about iPhone's future direction, and that has hurt Synchronoss, says lohn Bright, an analyst with investment bank Avandale Partners in Nashville, Tenn. Bright says AT&T may be looking for new channels for iPhone activation at the retail level, taking away business from Synchronoss.
The company, which provides activation software to telecom com- panies like AT&T, and settop box software to cable television providers like Time Warner Cable, had total revenue of $123.5 million last year. Synchronoss has also expanded its contract with Time Warner Cable to provide software for e-commerce transactions for video, broadband Internet, and telephone service.

Silicon Valley blogger Ryan Tate was settling into a quiet night at home -- a little "30 Rock" on the DVR, a few sips into his Hennessy and creme de menthe -- when Steve Jobs threw a wrench in the works.
A commercial for iPad came on, and it contained the word 'revolution,' " said Tate, who has blogged recently on Valleywag about Apple's aggressive response to an iPhone theft involving colleagues at Gawker Media. "That word struck a sour chord for me. Apple's been acting in many ways to suppress creativity and expression in the content it allows on the iPhone, including political cartoons. Jobs is admirable in some ways, but there've been so many cases where Apple seems to be going over to the darker side.
