Britain gave us Twiggy (remember her?) and the Beatles, and this week it's payback time. We're returning the favor with the slap and dash of an American presidential election. Old Blighty is awash in endless public-opinion polls, televised debates taking the measure of the candidates' cosmetics, celebrity endorsements, dramatic gaffes and a media-manufactured cry for some of Barack Obama's hopey- changey. The three-way race ends Thursday, when voters in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland decide whether to sack Gordon Brown and the Labor Party and, if so, whether to replace him with David Cameron and the Conservatives or Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats. The late polls show the Conservatives out front and inching toward a slender majority.
Recently, celebrity endorsements have been making news, with Oprah Winfrey's saying she will campaign for Illinois Democratic Sen. Barack Obama and Barbra Streisand's making the not-so-stunning announcement that she is supporting New York Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton.
It was not illegal, but by Connecticut political standards, it was improper for New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr. to use his office staff to announce his endorsement, as well as those of three aldermen, for Barack Obama. The endorsements were followed by a City Hall press release publicizing an Obama rally. Engaging City Hall workers for a partisan purpose while being paid by the taxpayers is not appropriate. The state Office of Ethics has advised officials against the practice.
Notes, quotes and anecdotes about Tuesday's election while wondering: If Sarah Palin hates the media elite so much, why did she major in journalism and become one of us? Endorsements box score -- According to Editor & Publisher, U.S. newspapers' presidential endorsements -- as of Friday -- included 240 for Barack Obama and 114 for John McCain. In total circulation, it was about 21 million for Obama and about 7 million for McCain.
Most West Virginia newspapers are endorsing Republican Mitt Romney for president of the United States as the state's voters head to the polls for the early voting period. The Charleston Daily Mail and the Moorefield Examiner on Wednesday announced their endorsements of Romney for president. At the start of early voting, Romney had the endorsement of 10 West Virginia newspapers. President Barack Obama, the Democrat incumbent, had one endorsement.
The numbers do not favor [Hillary Clinton] and the Pennsylvania win may be a pyrrhic victory because it will not significantly change [Barack Obama]'s relative delegate lead. In addition, Obama has recently received key endorsements from some of the former president's stalwarts even thoughr those endorsements do not in any way seem to reflect any animus towards the Clinton(s). They just want to end die in-fighting and party-bickering by latching on to the candidate whom they feel will make the better president. According to media reports, five former "Clintonites" and two former Senators have recently endorsed Obama-which speaks volumes. Spme polls indicate that he is ahead in the race for the White House when matched up against either one of the Democrats, whomever gets the party's nom...
WASHINGTON - Barack Obama erased Hillary Rodham Clinton's once- imposing lead among superdelegates Saturday when he added more endorsements from the group of Democrats who will decide the party's nomination for president. Obama added superdelegates from Utah, Ohio and Arizona, as well as two from the Virgin Islands who had previously backed Clinton. The additions enabled Obama to surpass Clinton's total for the first time in the campaign. He had picked up nine endorsements Friday.
Mayor crossed line on endorsement City Hall should have been kept out of DeStefano's backing Obama.
It's one of those things where I've had it in my blood since a young age. I was a county commissioner in my 20s and I was always politically active. But as I grew older, I saw that there's a reason for us to be politically involved, especially at the local level. I've given eight years of service to the community on the public Safety Appeals Board, the City Planning Commission, where I'm chair, and the Kalamazoo County Transportation Authority.
