WASHINGTON, May 19 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Millions of retirees currently provided health benefits by their former employer could be at risk, if legislation to address the recent Erie County court decision is not implemented, according to a new report from the Employment Policy Foundation (EPF), a Washington, D.C.-based research group. EPF calculated that the decision could increase employer retiree health liabilities-already over $650 billion-by another $114 billion without legislative action to fix the problem.
Currently, most employers spend more for their younger retirees to provide "bridge" benefits. Once a retiree reaches age 65, the employer provides health coverage to supplement Medicare. The court ruled that these unequal benefits unfairly discriminated against retirees who were o...

This study presents findings on the differential effects that leader communication has on worker performance and job satisfaction for part-time and full-time workers. For both part- and full-time employees, structural equation model results indicate that leader communication, as measured through motivating language (ML) use, has the same significant and positive effect on job satisfaction. However, in the case of performance, leader ML use only has a significant relationship with the output of full-time workers. These results indicate a boundary condition to the effectiveness of leader communication, and suggest practical implications for management interventions with today's workforce.

This notice announces the intent of the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) to conduct an evaluation of the designs for two of the three surveys that comprise the Scientists and Engineers Statistical Data System (SESTAT). This notice is in response to recent improvements to the design of the National Survey of College Graduates (NSCG) that potentially offset the further need for the National Survey of Recent College Graduates (NSRCG). As part of this evaluation, the NCSES is: (1) Investigating the possibility of discontinuing the information collection for the NSRCG; (2) examining the use of the American Community Survey (ACS) to increase the sample of young graduates within the NSCG; and (3) studying the impact of prov...

Jennifer Miller was about as permanent a temp as you can be. For 10 years, the Boise, Idaho, resident worked continuously at computer maker Hewlett-Packard but got her paycheck from a different employer. She was laid off from staffing firm Manpower in March, and is now the lead plaintiff in a class-action lawsuit accusing HP of unfairly excluding workers like her from benefits including vacation and holidays. The suit seeks more than $300 million in damages. The HP suits are among the latest examples of what's been dubbed "permatemp" litigation. It's a topic made famous by software giant Microsoft, which agreed to pay $97 million five years ago to settle the claims of workers given labels such as "temporary" employees, "freelancers" and "independent contractors.
