SAN BERNARDINO - An Ohio executive who apparently committed suicide last month is suspected of embezzling money set aside for retirement by teachers and other employees in more than 30 school districts in Southern California.
The chief financial officer of National Employee Benefit Services Inc., based in Cleveland, is suspected of taking a still undetermined amount of money that had been earmarked for retirement accounts, said company vice president Tracy Woolbright.

The DeWitt based bank acquired Hand Benefits & Trust, Inc. of Houston earlier this year to complement its own, existing employee-benefits business, Benefit Plans Administrative Services, Inc. SAN BERNARDINO - Thousands of employees at 31 school districts throughout the county were victimized in a scam in which a now- deceased financial executive embezzled more than $1 million worth of retirement funds.
Michael Duffy, who was the chief financial officer of National Employee Benefit Services Inc., of Cleveland, embezzled the funds between July 6 and Oct. 13, said Christine McGrew, spokeswoman for the County Superintendent of Schools Office.

The company also markets retirement plans and offer employee benefit consulting. Its client list includes municipalities, educational institutions, non-profits, manufacturers and other professionals.
