Just a decade ago, there were more than 10,000 credit unions (CU) in the US, served by more than 40 corporate credit unions. As CUs merged, some of the corporate CUs that serve them have also merged to maintain a competitive seat in the shrinking marketplace. Those that want to be bigger, especially geographically, are pushing the flow toward mergers among corporate credit unions right now. For example, more than two-thirds of the voting members of the then Central Credit Union Fund Inc agreed that a merger was a strategically sound idea, reports Jim Van Arsdale, CEO of the $245 million, 212-member credit union.
