Many studies related to leadership strongly indicate that emotion plays a significant role in leadership. This article presents the Emotional Quotient Matrix, which is based upon the tenets of emotional intelligence. The dimensions of the matrix are emotional strengths versus weaknesses and controllable versus uncontrollable traits. Leaders must maximize or hone strong emotional traits, while avoiding or improving upon emotional weaknesses. Controllable traits must be targets for improvement. The EQ Matrix poses a systematic means to both assess EQ and take action to improve it.
This study addresses the emotive dissonance and emotive effort dimensions of emotional labor and their relationships to the emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, personal accomplishments, and job satisfaction consequences of emotional labor with respect to licensed funeral directors. Four hypotheses were formulated. Emotive dissonance resulted in higher levels of emotional exhaustion. An inverse relationship resulted with higher levels of emotive effort, indicating lower levels of depersonalization. No support was revealed for higher levels of emotive dissonance being indicative of lower levels of job satisfaction; and higher level of emotive effort resulting in higher levels of job satisfaction. Implications for future research are also discussed.
In Gonzales v. Carhart the Supreme Court invoked post-abortion regret to justify a ban on a particular abortion procedure. The Court was proudly folk-psychological, representing its observations about women's emotional experiences as "self-evident." That such observations could drive critical legal determinations was, apparently, even more self-evident, as it received no mention at all. Far from being sui generis, Carhart reflects a previously unidentified norm permeating constitutional jurisprudence: reliance on what this Article coins "emotional common sense." Emotional common sense is what one unreflectively thinks she knows about emotions. A species of common sense, it seems obvious and universal to its holder-but this appearance is misleading. This Article articulates and evaluates...
Obedience, loyalty and seniority may mean something entirely different to Gen Y. Those now in leadership positions can either chafe at the differences, or use the tenets of Emotional Intelligence to meet the needs and desires of this youngest generation. During Sheriff Baca's speech, he used several demonstrated EI leadership styles to emotionally connect with his new deputies and their families: * Visionary: self-confidence; change catalyst; mobilize others to follow a vision * Democratic: team leadership; communication; build commitment through participation * Coaching: emotional self-awareness; builds strengths for the future The Sheriff was fully aware that the young officers he was addressing were not of his generation, but a unique generation. Providing the tools for the Y Gener...
There has been a growing emphasis within the accounting profession on the importance of interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence. The study begins the process of determining the extent of accountants' emotional intelligence competencies, which encompass interpersonal skills considered essential for today's accounting professional. In addition, because of a recent concern by accounting faculty and practitioners that the profession no longer may be attracting the best and the brightest people, the grade point average (GPA) of accounting students and nonaccounting business students are compared and relationship between the GPA and levels of emotional intelligence of these students is examined. The results indicate that the accounting students have a significantly higher GPA than the...
This study examined health care workers' (N=142) attitudes toward workplace fun and the level of fun they experienced at work as well as their emotional labor, emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction. Our results showed that the negative impact of emotional exhaustion on job satisfaction was significantly lower for health care workers' who experienced greater levels of fun at work. In general, the health care workers in this sample expressed positive attitudes toward workplace fun. These results, their implications, and directions for future research are discussed.
The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine the relationship between the emotional intelligence and gender of the principal, and teacher's perceptions of the principal's leadership effectiveness. The researcher administered the Emotional IQ Test (Jerabek, 1998) to 32 randomly selected principals. One hundred and sixty randomly selected teachers in the buildings of these administrators then took the observer form of the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) (Kouzes & Posner's, 2001) to measure the leader's perceived effectiveness. The leadership practices and gender were correlated to the two aspects of emotional intelligence to determine possible relationships. Findings show that principals with higher emotional intelligence are perceived to be more effective. Overall, women...
