DUBLIN (AP) -- Carrying cardboard boxes groaning with crockery and clothes, Kylee O'Brien clears a space at her makeshift market stall and lays out her wares -- trappings of a life in Ireland brought to an abrupt end by the country's economic crisis.
The 34-year-old is selling almost everything her family owns -- from a vintage telephone to a child's bicycle -- and heading overseas, just like thousands of others fleeing the debt-wracked country, pushing emigration to a level not seen since Ireland's financial gloom of the 1980s.

Regarding "19-year discrepancy" (Readers' Forum, July 25), on the use of Emigration Canyon vs. Parleys Canyon among pioneers, there is a difference of opinion as to the numbers of people using the two canyons before the railroad came in 1869. In 1850 Parley P. Pratt completed the Golden Pass Road. It was nine miles longer than Emigration Canyon, a toll had to be paid (Pratt collected $1,500 that first year) and it was more difficult than Emigration. "... camping and crowbars were needed, just to make it through the 'developed roads,' ... the road was every bit as tortuous as the old way ... it represents less than half of the total travelers" (quotes from "West of Fort Bridger, The Pioneering of Immigrant Trails Across Utah, 1848-1850").

The Golden Door is a lurid, lucid dream with hints of Fethni, conceived and directed by Emanuele Crialese (Respiro). It is not about illusions to be dissolved or revelations to be had-those wide-eyed stares of wonder so familiar in the typical immigration saga. It's about a family leaving everything they know, carrying nearly nothing, for a land so foreign and unknown they might as well be boarding a spaceship. It is, therefore, more accurately described as a story of leaving rather than coming, of emigration as opposed to immigration (and, as Al Sharpton might add "frustration, depredation and anything but a vacation to another nation").

EMIGRATION CANYON -- It tickles Cindy Furse to see the old Pink Garage standing sentinel at the entrance to tony Emigration Oaks.
Rumored as a one-time house of ill repute, the dilapidated shack is an Emigration Canyon icon. Its flagging pink siding marks a stark contrast to the stylish stone and stucco mansions in the exclusive hillside subdivision.

Reconstructing the details of the emigration in Sinology and East Asian art history has become very difficult because of the loss of expertise and creativity of German scholars who fled their country during the National Socialist regime. Dramatic shifts have characterized the historiography of Chinese studies. These shifts have never been examined nor analyzed in discussions. They have contributed to the confusion and difficulties of analyzing emigration concerns in Sinology and East Asian art.
