A group of southern Humboldt County residents are hoping to capture the independent spirit of the area by creating a city that utilizes revenues from the local marijuana industry. Jim Lamport, a legal document assistant with Lamport Legal Documents in Garberville, said the Humboldt Organizing Group said the move toward incorporation, or the formation of a city, is "almost self evident.
On its own it's not a smart economic move," says [Ron Celentano]. "A lot of it's based on the contractor, so it's important to shop around." But the average system, he says, costs around $24,000, and the average Philly rooftop simply doesn't have enough area for all the solar panels needed to significantly offset energy use. "We own a huge warehouse in Kensington where all our conservation work is done," she says. "We retrofitted that space using a solar radiant floor heating system, and it's fabulous. It's extremely low-cost, it's absolutely silent, it's so comfortable and it's clean. It's a wonderful way to heat space. I strongly recommend people start thinking about the full range of what solar energy can do." (J.B.) "ItIl break down, and then you've got all these brick particles cl...
The Coast Guard is establishing a temporary special local regulation for a portion of Saint Andrew Bay, Panama City, FL. This action is necessary for the safeguard of participants and spectators, including all crews, vessels, and persons on navigable waters during the Emerald Coast Super Boat Grand Prix high speed boat races. Entry into, transiting in or anchoring in this area is prohibited to all vessels not registered with the sponsor as participants or not part of the regatta patrol, unless specifically authorized by the Captain of the Port (COTP) Mobile or a designated representative.
So did host Steven Crowder, a YouTube comedian and Tea Party circuit rider who entertained the crowd between speeches with the kind of ethnic humor that went out of style with Vaudeville. Crowder imitated the accents and made fun of Zambians, Koreans, Germans and, of course, Muslims. "You ever noticed [that] when they talk about the racist homophobic hatemongers that Islam always gets a pass?" he asked. "It's like, 'Islam is a religion of peace; it's the Christians you have to worry about.' They're not going to disagree with them," he said, sliding into mock dialect: "Yes, we're a religion of peace, OK. If you don't agree, I'll keeeeel you! According to [Brad Lewis], [Barack Obama] is plotting a permanent takeover. "Most of you people say, 'We're gonna change that back when the next el...
Eddie Ward was so excited about going to rehearsal last Monday that he practically flew up the stairs to the second-floor studio at the Bangor Opera House. Outside rehearsal, he's a regular 11-year-old from Bangor. Once he's in theater mode, though, he's part of a group of 12 area kids age 8 to 11 chosen to perform as Munchkins in the national touring production of "The Wizard of Oz," set for a performance at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, at University of Maine's Collins Center for the Arts in Orono.
Over the years Buffalo has been referred to by many names, the Queen City, the Nickel City, the City of Light and the City of Good Neighbors. I believe it's time to call Buffalo the Emerald City. Buffalo and the surrounding region have the potential to become the greenest location on the Great Lakes. The Emerald City will be the city that recognized the opportunity and seized the moment to build the yellow brick road to prosperity as the largest green manufacturing and services city in the United States.
Nestled in a valley of the Fairywood neighborhood in the city's West End, the Emerald Gardens townhome community boasts a 90 percent occupancy rate and a fresh new look. That's a major improvement from its history under the name Westgate Village.
Last week I digressed from my Discover America series to write about the chain of events that have plagued the airline industry the past two weeks and the significance of working with a travel professional. Last October, I had the pleasure of traveling to Seattle with my friends Marjorie and Bill Handel, to celebrate a birthday of a special friend.
OAKWOOD -- Twins Grace and Sarah Geehen, 8, of Oakwood have been learning the song Ease on Down the Road from the movie The Wiz. "I like to sing and dance a lot," Sarah said. She, Grace and others have been practicing for an upcoming performance in the Youth Winter Follies. Sarah said being in front of an audience won't faze her. "I perform a lot," she said. "I used to do Irish dance." Learning to perform is part of the reason the Youth Winter Follies was started. Follies director Michelle Kane hopes the show will allow young people to express themselves and be excited, not anxious, when performing. The Youth Winter Follies will be presented Friday at the Engineer's Club, 110 E. Monument Ave., in downtown Dayton.
