  • Music: Lots to like about Julian Velard There are many things to like about Brooklyn-based musician Julian Velard, appearing tonight at Club Cafe, South Side. But it's his grasp of pop imagery that might be most impressive, from the song "Jimmy Dean and Steve McQueen" to the song playing on his website that's an homage to Bob Dylan's video for "Subterranean Homesick Blues." Nor does it hurt that Velard writes catchy tunes that are a hybrid of early Elton John and Tin Pan Alley.

  • There was no more dramatic conclusion in any national auto racing championship chase this season than the one that occurred in the American Le Mans Series. In a battle that went down to the fifth tiebreaker, Williamsville's Eric Lux emerged as a co-champion in the Le Mans Prototype Challenge (LMPC) class of the ALMS. Lux, who drives for Genoa Racing of Zionsville, Ind., emerged in a tie for the LMPC points lead with Core Autosport co-driving teammates Gunnar Jeannette and Ricardo Gonzalez following the ALMS season finale Oct. 1, the 14th annual Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. The ALMS is one of the national major league sports car road racing groups in North America and features drivers from many different countries.

  • Just days ago, Lucy Lilienthal sat in her Junior Dragster in the staging lanes at Dunn Tire Raceway Park coping with the pressure that came with waiting for an all important first run of eliminations that she hoped would help her win her third career DTRP Junior Dragster championship. Although she was confident she could maintain her slim 10-point advantage over fellow racer and friend Brett Klinger going into the season points final, the pressure of eliminations became a moot point when the rains came, canceling the race and clinching the title for her.

  • LONG BEACH - Adrian Fernandez is familiar with the 1.97-mile temporary street course at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. He's raced in Long Beach in an Indy car, in Indy Lights, in the Grand-Am series and, for the past three season, the American Le Mans Series. It's a track I've known for a long time," the Mexico City native said Friday following the ALMS qualifying session. "This track can bite you. It's bumpy, it changes a lot through the race. You have to know when to push and when to be conservative.

  • Early in 2002, Brock Young raced his Super Stock at regional tracks. At the same time, former Little Valley Speedway General Manager Gary Montgomery was involved with running the racing program at Little Valley on behalf of the Cattaraugus County fair board. While Young and Montgomery never met, events in the following months bonded them in a special way. During that season, Young would perish in a highway accident and Montgomery would take notice of one of the track's more popular divisions, the Super Stocks.

  • Courtesy photo "Power To The People" is one of a number of new releases compiling the work of John Lennon, who would have turned 70 last Saturday. John Lennon thrives, at least when it comes to the industry surrounding him. The former Beatle was shot dead in 1980, at 40. Saturday would have been his 70th birthday. Apart from the television specials, books, new monuments and Nowhere Boy movie, theres a huge amount of music on offer remastered CDs and newly released songs. Power to the People: the Hits comes as a single- disc introduction or a deluxe edition with a DVD of all its songs. The compilation is similar to Lennon Legend from 1997, with five fewer tracks. Just about all Lennon collections have Give Peace a Chance, Instant Karma! and (if you must) Happy Xmas (War is Over). Rating...

  • We had a football coaches meeting the other day and all the West Side coaches were talking about how we really don't get that much respect," Crane head coach Anthony Jackson told the Defender. "Because of the success of schools like Morgan Park and Julian, the South Side schools get more noticed in football. By reaching the Public League finals we will be able to prove that we on the West Side can also play football as well as basketball. "That loss to Marist was a real wakeup call for us," Morgan Park head coach Lexie Spurlock told the Defender. "Now we're really focused on winning the Public League championship and then going on to the Prep Bowl." Dunbar also returned to the Public League playoffs after losing to Hubbard in the Class 6-A state playoffs. Hubbard remains the only Publ...
