  • ELLSWORTH - A national beef recall announced recently by the U.S. Department of Agriculture because of possible E. coli contamination has reached at least one Maine community. The Ellsworth School Department was notified last week that one of its food distributors was recalling a shipment of beef patties, some of which made it to the high school.

  • STEUBEN - Now that the Maine Department of Education has decided to turn the state's 152 school administrative systems into 80, Steuben - like many other communities - has a decision to make. Option 1: Steuben can stay with Union 96 in Hancock County, which likely will be consolidated with Union 92 and the Ellsworth School Department under the state's recommendation.

  • ELLSWORTH - The Ellsworth School Department will hold its kindergarten registration for the 2009-2010 school year from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, and Thursday, Feb. 26, at the Dr. Charles C. Knowlton School. This will be a registration evening only. Appointments will be made for spring screenings after registration.

  • ELLSWORTH - Two teenagers face a charge of disorderly conduct following a recent incident during which they sprayed a stinky substance on a Ellsworth School Department bus. Ellsworth police Officer Gil Jameson, the department's liaison for Ellsworth High School, issued summonses this week to both students, whose names were not released.

  • ELLSWORTH - The local school system has received a federally funded grant of more than $600,000 for enhancing high school tutorial programs to combine with a similar grant it received last year, according to officials. The purpose of the $637,000 grant is to provide specific tutorial assistance to Ellsworth High School students for the next five years, Katrina Kane, curriculum director of the Ellsworth School Department, said Thursday.

  • ELLSWORTH - The Ellsworth School Department will hold its kindergarten registration and screening on Monday, March 6, and Tuesday, March 7, at the Dr. Charles C. Knowlton School. Any child who will be 5 years old by Oct. 15, 2006, is eligible.

  • BANGOR - After four years, Bangor Assistant Superintendent Frank Hackett is leaving to head the Ellsworth School Department. I feel a calling. I'm ready to get back into it," said Hackett, who was superintendent in East Millinocket and Camden-Rockport before taking the second-highest administrative position in Bangor in 2001.

  • ELLSWORTH - Katrina Kane, the director of curriculum for the Ellsworth School Department, has been appointed interim superintendent. She will temporarily replace outgoing superintendent John R. Turcotte, who is resigning his position for a job in the Sanford school system. His last day is June 30.

  • ELLSWORTH - The school department's after-school program, Project ASPIRE, will host its annual Lights On Afterschool event tonight at 5. Lights On Afterschool is a nationally celebrated event launched in 2000 by the Afterschool Alliance in an attempt to urge leaders to support the after-school programs that keep children safe, inspire them to learn, and help working families.
