  • Just two months in, 2011 has already been a banner year, a true benchmark, for jazz's first family. Last month, the five musical Marsalises -- pianist and patriarch Ellis, world-famous trumpeter and composer Wynton, versatile saxophonist Branford, trombone great Delfeayo and dynamic drummer Jason -- were collectively named one of the National Endowment for the Arts' Jazz Masters, the highest honor an American jazz musician can hold. It was the first time the honor was bestowed upon a group. The elder Marsalis and his youngest son, Jason, and bassist Jason Stewart perform as part of PCA Great Performances' season on Friday night. Besides being known as the father of jazz musicians Branford and Wynton, has a huge reputation for his dedication to music education, backed by a lifetime of work teaching jazz. He will be joined by his son Jason on drums and Peter Harris on bass. A grand master of the jazz piano, Marsalis, a native of New Orleans, is one of the most important artists in the history of the genre. He is a favorite of jazz artists and lovers alike, lauded by critics for his luminous touch, probing sense of harmony and keen melodic imagination.
