The purpose of this study was to explore cognitive process used by selected preservice elementary teachers on basic types of problems involving number sense. The sample was selected from students in six intact entry-level mathematics sections of a course populated by preservice elementary school teachers. In the beginning of the semester, the instrument used to collect data was the Number Sense Test (NST). The score from the NST was analyzed. Six participants were randomly selected for individual interviews from students who scored in the top 10% and six participants whose scores ranked in the bottom 10 % on the NST to be interviewed. All students interviewed in this study do so voluntarily and completed data collection tasks during the Spring 2002 semester for the study. According to t...
Ramirez Thomas Elementary School on Santa Fe's south side is only 7 years old, but it is the ninth-lowest achieving school in the state -- and the lowest in Santa Fe. It hasn't met state standards for Adequate Yearly Progress since 2005. It's not a bad school -- according to Robin Noble, who replaced founding Principal Carlos Alarid last year. "It just needs direction to help these kids," she said.
Bonham Elementary is entering the home stretch. Students will soon start the second semester of the 2010-2011 school year, the last semester ever for the oft-flooded Sissonville area school. Bonham students will move into Flinn Elementary this fall. This year already has brought changes for the small elementary school. For the first time in its 43-year history, Bonham doesnt have any fifth- graders those students moved to Sissonville Elementary. The schools longtime principal, Michael Pack, retired last year. New principal Melissa Wilfong started her new gig this summer with 12 teacher vacancies to fill. The only teachers remaining at Bonham were ones who will move to Flinn after the consolidation. Others went to Sissonville Middle with the fifth-graders, and some took jobs at other sc...
ANDOVER -- The Andover Elementary School will have two new veteran teachers, Tracy Morin and Beth Clarke, in the classroom when school begins Aug. 31. I am very pleased to be able to inform you that I approved transfer requests from two experienced and successful elementary school teachers to move to the Andover School for the coming year," David W. Murphy, superintendent of schools for SAD 44 in Bethel, said.
NEW YORK, June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Hundreds of New York City public elementary school teachers reported in a survey that their students are making healthier food choices because of CookShop, a nutrition education program of the Food Bank For New York City that is funded and supported by the USDA. This finding is significant at a time when 43 percent of the city's elementary school children are overweight or obese. Education is the best path out of poverty, but when children are poorly nourished, they don't perform as well in school. The ill effects are long-term and far-reaching," said Lucy Cabrera, Ph.D., the Food Bank's President and CEO. "CookShop improves their food choices and inspires families to come together around the kitchen table for healthy, affordable meals.
HIGHLAND - Parents and former teachers of the now defunct Banner Elementary School are banding together to open a new private Christian School. Parent Troy Terbest says a meeting was held Tuesday night to discuss forming a new school board. The group is aiming to have the school open by Sept. 7 and awaiting conformation on a school site, he said.
I always thought elementary school teachers were the only ones who cared about seating arrangements. Last weeks Clark County Board of Health meeting proved me wrong.
Dublin Elementary School teachers are stretching the definition of gym class, making it livelier, and, sometimes, taking it outside the gym. Pulaski school system teachers April Moore, Morgann King and Eric Martin added time to focus on nutrition, hygiene and flexibility during their physical education classes this year.
Elementary school teachers and naturalists preach that insects are our friends, but we still have a largely insect-phobic culture. When Mom screeches upon seeing a bee, when Uncle Joe kills every insect he sees and when the horror movie features giant spiders, little Johnnie learns fear. In midsummer in the garden or garden center, bumblebees, honeybees and butterflies dance among the flowers and wallow in the pollen of coneflowers and goldenrod. It's a joy to watch them and fun to try to count the pollinator species. But what I often hear is, "Watch out, they sting!
